White Salmon Steelheade rs Memorial Scholarship 1. Background Information The White Salmon Steelheaders (WSS) is a club of fishing enthusiasts who are particularly interested in the preservation and enhancement of fish and wildlife habitat, and our environment. This scholarship is intended to encourage students to pursue a field of study in those areas, and is in memory of the club’s founder John Thomas and longtime board member Carolyn Layson.

2. Application Requirements Applications should be orderly and concise. Elaborate presentations are not necessary; however careless presentations will definitely handicap the applicant. The application should be bound and be no more then 15-pages long (one side only) including exhibits, letters and application form. Exhibits evidencing notable achievements in leadership, athletics, community service, etc., may be attached. (Note: such attachments should be reproductions of originals. Applications become the property of the WSS scholarship committee and will not be returned to the applicant.) Applications must be submitted to your school’s main office prior to April 15 of the current year.

3. Eligibility Graduating seniors from White Salmon, Glenwood, Klickitat, Trout Lake and Lyle high schools who are planning full-time attendance at an accredited college or university, pursuing a degree RELATING TO THE MANAGEMENT OR STUDY OF THE NATURAL RESOURCES AND/OR ENVIRONMENT may apply. Technical or vocational school will be considered if within above field of study.

4. The Award The scholarship is a grant of $500 to be applied to costs of tuition, room and board, fees or books and materials incurred as part of college education. It will be in the form of a certificate of award, confirmed upon enrollment of the student in an accredited college or university. Due to variances in college and university practices in handling grants, the recipient of the WSS Memorial Scholarship will be provided a choice in how their scholarship will be credited toward their expenses. The award must be used during the year following high school graduation. The recipient will be announced during “Scholarship Night” prior to graduation.

5. Exhibits Applications for the WSS Memorial Scholarship must include the following: ►A statement prepared by the applicant of not more than 300 words.
