P R O G R A M :

Today we met at the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s new building – the old Railroad Depot in Sycamore. The remodeling looked great! DCCF is 20 years old. Jerry Smith (past director) introduced the current director – Dan Templin. Dan asked how many people were in the building for the first time. One of the people who didn’t raise her hand was Betty Hampa – she was first here in 1960 or so, when her father worked with the railroad. That was right about the time the building stopped being an active railroad depot. Then Clint Cargile gave us a history of the depot. While many depots are cookie-cutter types, Sycamore’s (built in 1880) is one of the unique ones, and was designed to impress people. It was made of locally produced bricks and Batavia Limestone, in an Italianate design, to match the elegant homes of the area railroad magnates. It had a giant American flag that was the first thing people would see on their approach to town. Depots used to be the center of the community. All goods and people arrived by train. Also the mail and newspapers. The telegraph was in the depot. All the new fangled inventions (like bicycles) came through, so that’s where people first saw these things. And sometimes their last view of the dearly departed. Politicians would draw large crowds. During muddy times, railroads were the only dependable transportation. The Sycamore & Cortland RR connected with the Galena & Chicago (later the C&NW), which helped Sycamore become the County Seat. Dan took back the microphone and described the renovation project and showed lots of pictures – before and after. (Picture at right is an after shot of the freight room). The after pictures look a lot better then the before pictures.
