Under 20 Art Exhibition 2015 Juried Youth Art Show at the Chait Galleries Downtown

We are pleased to announce the return of the Juried Youth Art Show at The Chait Galleries Downtown! We have updated the show to include any young artist less than 20 years of age who lives in the Iowa City Community School District. The opening reception will be Friday, April 17, 2015, with the show running through May 15, 2015.

The Under 20 Art Exhibition 2015 is designed to showcase the breadth of experience young students are receiving from their art education. The purpose of this exhibit is to foster the creation of original art among Iowa City youth by providing the experience of exhibiting and selling work in a professional setting. For many students, this exhibition will be their first taste of working with an art gallery, something they may encounter in their future art careers. They will have the opportunity to work with the gallery owners and staff and to discuss with the professional artist and jurors that organized this opportunity. Several prizes will be awarded to the Best in Show, Most Creative, Best Presentation, and Artistic Interpretation.

In the enclosed packet, you will find all of the details for your students to submit work to this show. Each student may submit up to three pieces of work and the work must be for sale. We do ask that you be willing to make copies of the packet to distribute to your students. You can find a digital version of this packet on our website, www.chaitgalleries.com. We accept entries through e-mail, postal mail or by hand delivery. Deadline for entry is midnight on March 20, 2015.

Submissions: Students are invited to submit 3 pieces of art that must be for sale. Students must submit an application, images of the artwork on a disc or JPEG email attachment, a signed Artist Representation and Consignment Agreement, and a brief Artist’s Statement. The application materials must be postmarked March 18, 2015 or delivered to the gallery by March 20, 2015. Students will be notified of acceptance by email on or before March 27, 2015. Upon acceptance, work needs to arrive at the Chait Galleries Downtown by 6pm on Friday, April 7, 2015.

All original works in 2-D and 3-D media are accepted including photography, jewelry and digital. All work must be original and created within the past year.

All accepted artwork must arrive at the gallery exhibition ready. 2-D drawings, photographs or paintings need to be framed. Paintings on canvas must be framed or the sides of the canvas must be painted to finish the edges. We recommend stopping by Blick Art Supplies, Hobby Lobby, Michaels or Ben Franklin.

All work must be labeled with your name, school, title and retail price.

The Under 20 Art Exhibition 2015 Juried Show: The Under 20 Art Exhibition 2015 will be on display at the Chait Galleries Downtown from April 17th through May 15th, with the opening reception on Friday, April 17, 2015 from 5-8 pm. All students, friends and family are invited to attend. Invitations will be available for the students and/or teachers to pick up at the gallery beginning April 2. Students may pick up unsold work after the closing of the show on Saturday, May 16 and no later than Friday, May 24 at 4:00 p.m. If there is a conflict with the pick-up date, arrangements can be made with the gallery.

Awards: Through local sponsors, The Under 20 Art Exhibition 2015 anticipates several cash and art-related prizes for: Best in Show Creativity Presentation Artistic Interpretation And Various Other Awards

Winners will be revealed during the opening reception on April 17, 2015.

Judging: Artwork will be judged on creativity, composition, and technique by a combination of local artists and gallery staff. All entries will be judged by the same criteria with a system that keeps the work anonymous until final choices are made.

Artist Statement: The Chait Galleries Downtown requests that students submit a brief one paragraph artist statement, with background information about the student and their work. The student might also include such information as why they are artists, what inspires them, or how they became interested in creating art.

Exhibits are diverse and continuously changing, featuring local, regional and international artists. Small works of jewelry and tiny oil paintings give way to large expansive works of acrylic, oil and pastel, bronze and ceramic sculptures and mixed media work of all kinds. Our service shop offers framing, lighting, installation, and an array of fine art services.

This agreement is by and between the Chait Galleries Downtown and (please print your name) ______(Artist).

Representation: The Chait Galleries Downtown agrees to represent the Artist in the Gallery from April 17, 2015 through May 15, 2015. The Gallery may request an extended exhibition of an Artist’s work, providing there is ample interest in the work.

The Gallery requests a typed or digital Artist’s Statement, which is a brief description of the artists’ background, artistic philosophy, and techniques used.

The Gallery may photograph and represent the Artist and the Artist’s work in advertising, displays, catalogs, promotions, emails, and on their web site.

Sales: Work that is sold will generate a 50% commission of the sales price to the Artist. This amount will be paid monthly, by the 20th of the month following the date of the sale.

Artwork: The Gallery requires high quality artwork that is guaranteed by the Artist. The Artist is responsible for the cost of replacement of broken parts or damage or defects caused by lack of quality control.

Pick Up and Delivery: The Artist is responsible for delivering and picking up his or her work to and from the Gallery. If the work is left more than one year, those items will become the property of the Gallery.

Insurance: The Gallery will insure all work on exhibit at the Gallery and in the event of loss, will pay the Artist 50% of the retail value of the Artwork.
