Remember! A standard 5 paragraph essay follows this format: o Introduction paragraph: starts with a great lead sentence, introduces your topic clearly; ends with the thesis sentences that states the main points of the essay. o 1st body paragraph: develops the first point in your thesis sentences and proves your point with examples and direct quotes. o 2nd body paragraph: develops the second point in your thesis. o 3rd body paragraph: develops the third point in your thesis, etc. o Conclusion paragraph: reasserts your main points and gives added insights into your topic; ends with a strong reflection on the topic.

Essay Guidelines: a) When analyzing literature, name the literary work and author in the introduction paragraph. Afterwards, refer to the author by last name. b) Prove your points and support your opinions by using direct quotations from the literary work or by briefly describing specific scenes in the work. Make sure to introduce your quotes and examples and support them with analysis (note: I did not say PLOT SUMMARY). NO QUOTE BOMBS! Make sure to cite your quote passages with page number is parenthesis: “Elizabeth, your justice would freeze beer!” (58). Each body paragraph must have 3 examples; TWO of them MUST be direct quotes. (CITED PROPERLY!) c) This paper is not just your opinion, so please refrain from using “I think…” “You can see….” You are The Crucible authority – have confidence in yourself and state your wisdom in third person! d) Talk about the story in the present tense. (For example: Abigail loves John. Proctor tells him that…; In The Crucible, Arthur Miller shows the evils of mass hysteria…). e) Sort your body paragraphs! Your strongest point should be your 3rd body paragraph, your second strongest as your 1st body paragraph, and your least strong as your 2nd body paragraph. f) Also, make sure to give your essay an engaging title! (not just “Crucible Essay”) Your creative English teacher likes more than that – you should know this by now! An “A” or “B” Quality Essay Will… o Follow all the above directions and guidelines o Use concrete, specific, vivid language o Be free of run-on sentences, fragments, grammatical & spelling errors. o Support claims with detailed quotes paired with ANALYSIS!!!!! o Thoroughly ANALYZE the SO WHAT
