Mission: To disseminate and interpret information on the behavior and design of structural steel members, cold-formed to shape from flat materials, and to stimulate research and the publication of technical papers in this field of activity. ASCE-SEI Committee on Cold-Formed Steel
Wednesday, 27 July 2005, 7-8am Baltimore, MD
1) Approval of Agenda / Agenda Updates approved 2) Attendance Tom Sputo, Don Allen, Vince Sagan, Perry Green, Cheng Yu, Ed Kile, Helen Chen, Roger Laboube, Jim Crews, Ben Schafer 3) Approval of previous minutes approved 4) Opening Remarks Tom Sputo will be the new Chair of ASCE-SEI CFS, Congratulations!
5) Old Business a) ASCE Special Projects: Bracing Proposal (Tom Sputo) Document is in final pagination, out in late Sept./early Oct., Tom has 10 free copies, any reviewers, etc., who desire a copy should contact Tom directly, Tom will transmit to Don Allen a contact name so that SFA/LGSEA can help market and sell the document. b) STRUCTURE magazine articles See June issue of STRUCTURE for CFS bonanza + historic iron bridges! June issue was circulated Tom Sputo may want to consider a brief article related to the bracing work in the near future. c) J. of Struct. Eng. Special CFS Issue based on 2004 CCFSS conference 20 papers from conference + 2 more assigned by ASCE, 6 declined, 7 approved, and 9 currently in the re-review process Authors and reviewers were asked to work as quickly as they can d) Cold-Formed Steel FAQs work Schafer will transmit to Sputo Roger noted that the CCFSS could be a possible home for any unique FAQs that the committee creates.
6) Current/Ongoing Business a) 2006 Structures Congress (St. Louis, May 18 through 21 2006) Champion Tentative Titles and Speakers SESSION ACCEPTED: Don Allen – Session 1 – Load Bearing Cold-Formed Steel Behavior and Design Don Allen, Nabil Rahman, Reynaud Serrette SESSION STATUS UNKNOWN: NOT SUBMITTED Tom Sputo – Session 2 – Bracing CFS Tom Sputo, Perry Green?, Jay Larson contact SESSION REJECTED: Ben Schafer – Session 3 – CFS 101 Roger LaBoube, Ben Schafer, Sam Easterling
b) Coordination work with other cold-formed steel organizations i) brief reports/comments from peer groups (1) CCFSS (Roger) Short Course Oct 18-20 in St. Louis Spec. Conference Oct 26-27 2006 in Orlando, Call for Papers out Some beginning discussion on how to coordinate ASCE with the Center was completed, focusing on possible special JSE issues in the future, or other ways to help make sure the best of the best from the Conf. make it to journal publications, etc. (2) SSRC (Ben) Ongoing work on the SSRC guide was mentioned. Flyers for a conference on Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures to be help in Portugal in Spet. 2006 and sponsored in part by SSRC were given to the committee for more information go to www.civil.ist.utl.pt/sdss (3) AISI-COS (Helen) No report (4) AISI-COFS (JayDon) Sept 13-14 is the next COFS meeting (Baltimore), Lateral Standard and the Wall Standard both went out this year! (5) LGSEA (Don) LGSEA has become part of SFA (and thus the AISI family). Significant reorganization is underway with the goal of providing better aid to Structural engineers working in cold-formed steel. Wed. Oct 5 at MetalCon is the next open members meeting, much more information is available at www.lgsea.com (6) SSMA (Don) SSMA is making overtures to align itself more with SFA as well. Oct. 4 is the next SSMA full meeting.
7) New Business a) Journal of Structural Engineering award nominees? Cold-Formed Steel Papers from July 2004 through June 2005 (attached) Potential awards and eligible papers were briefly reviewed. Three papers will be forwarded to the committee for consideration as possibly award quality with the idea that one may be worthy of an award nomination that would come from this committee.
It was discussed that Duane Ellifritt should be nominated for the George Winter award. Committee members agreed and Tom Sputo will lead the charge on this. b) Research needs list (to be initiated again in 2005) based on research needs consider a 2006 special project submittal 8) Logistics/Organization Details a) Roster updating the roster was not circulated at the meeting. Members can keep their info up to date with ASCE by changing their information on the ASCE web site. b) Control group members The end of Ben’s tenure as chair leaves an opening on the control group. c) Future meeting locations? Consider switching between COS and COFS? other ideas? Other venues should also be considered.
9) Next Meeting funded for control group members, February AISI-COS February 22 looks like the next meeting
10) Review of action items resulting from this meeting. JSE special issue authors and reviewers are asked to work as quickly as possible Allen – 2006 structures cong., continue to spearhead effort for this session Sputo – Shepherd Winter award and possibly other award nominees
11) Adjournment {Chair’s note: thanks for the fun the last several years. - Ben}
