Week 5 Term 2 Friday 22nd May 2015
Dear Parents and Carers,
Priorities for 2015
Our school priorities are as follows-:
Continued implementation of the Australian Curriculum Improved student performance in Reading Improved student performance in Numeracy Strong Community Partnerships Embed our whole school Pedagogical Framework in all that we do.
Parent Handbook Just a reminder that most general information regarding day to day operation of the school is located in the Parent Handbook.
Enrolment Details If at any time your details or your child’s details change (eg. phone numbers, address, emergency contact details etc) please notify the office straight away. This ensures clear communication between school and home. Thanks in advance.
Chaplaincy at Marburg Chappy week was this week and students turned up dressed as You Can Do It characters on Wednesday 20th May. The gold coin donations go towards supporting and sustaining our chaplains in schools so thank you to the students for your support.
Walk Safely to School Day — 22 May Today students were encouraged to take part in Walk Safely to School Day. Walking or taking public transport to school promotes a healthy lifestyle and responsible behavior around our streets, while also reducing traffic around our school. It would be great to see parents joining in as well.
School Photos The date for school photos has been moved from Tuesday 2nd June to Wednesday 3rd June. The information notes and envelopes went home with students on Wednesday 20th May. Please bring this envelope and money to school ON PHOTO DAY to be handed to the photographer.
Principal Absences Mrs Newton will be absent from school on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd June due to Professional Development. Mrs Gail Ducci will be officer in charge on these days. Thank you. PREP-1 NEWS The students have all worked well this fortnight. In Mathematics the Year Ones are working on place value such an important aspect of number. They have been using bundles of paddle-pop sticks, MAB and the abacus to see how our decimal system works. Together with memorizing their number facts, this work is preparation for 2-digit addition and subtraction operations. The students need to chant the number facts every night, as once they are known, they will be there for life. By the end of the year, they will need to know these facts automatically. The Preps have been doing lots of counting activities. They have also been identifying similarities and differences in shape or size and using the language of opposites – straight sides/round sides, short/tall - as well as the language of comparison. We do handwriting almost every day and still there are some students in Year One, who do not take any care when completing their homework. I do not mind if the students use a medium other than a pencil to do their work but I do object to work that is scribbled onto the page. We have been using our Smart Moves time to practise our ball games skills. There are quite a few students who are afraid of catching a ball. Do encourage your child to play with balls at home, catching and throwing them to each other. Thank you to Mrs Campbell for helping out with Cars and Stars on Monday morning. The School Photograph letter and order form went home on Wednesday. Please make sure that if you are placing an order, no money comes to school until the day of the photograph. Until next week, Caio, Gail Ducci
2-4 NEWS Hello Everyone, It is amazing to think that we are already half way through the term. A lot of work and learning has been completed, with more still to go. There are several ‘days’ coming up between now and the end of the term so please be on the lookout for information on these in the newsletter, Facebook and in student bags. We welcome Chaise and Darnell back to our school. Our class now numbers 22 in total. Thank you to those parents who assist their children with homework. Homework is set at a consolidating level only and should not cause students any major difficulty. New topics and ideas are covered during class time, while homework is revision of material that should be known at an automatic level, with repeated practice. Please let me know if your child has any issues with the tasks set. Our first set of speaking and listening rotations has been completed. Students will now be assessed when completing their assignments in the next timetable. Please find a copy of the timetable within this newsletter. If your child has decided on their experiment for the annual science fair please remind them to tell me so that it can be recorded. Students who leave this until the last minute are often disappointed that their favourite experiment has already been allocated to another student. The fair is a presentation day and practise needs to be completed at home. On a personal note, thank you to all those parents who asked after my well-being since my recent illness. Community concern is one of the reasons that working within a small school setting is so enjoyable. Until next time, Marina K
5-6 NEWS Well with NAPLAN a distant memory we are now back to what really counts for us every day and that is the teaching and learning of our core skills to all students. Students have continued work on their Art of persuasion unit and we have begun to actually create our cereal products. Each student requires an old empty cereal or a similar box to then cover and redesign their own brand and product on. The next step is selling/promoting their product to the class in a multi-modal presentation. Can’t wait to see them!!! Students have begun graphing their own spelling results this week and will continue to do so for the remainder of the year. They record pre-test results on a Monday and post-test on a Friday to gauge improvement during the week, these are then displayed on our Data wall inside the classroom. It is a great way for each student to be more accountable for their own results and to also set goals. In mathematics we are focussed on measurement/ financial maths and fractions, all concepts are continually revised and are a basis for most maths homework given out on Monday. Congratulations to Brooke and Maddison who have qualified for Regional Cross Country and will compete at Limestone Park next week, we wish them all the best. Please remember that Homework is due each Friday and if at any time you have any queries regarding your child please do not hesitate to call me or make an appointment to come up and discuss any concerns or progress. Thank you and have a great week. Until next time, Mrs N BOOKCL UB All monies and orders to be returned to the office by Thursday 28th May.

A great big Thank You to all those parents and staff who baked, donated ingredients and to those who helped set up, prepared, cooked, served, packed and cleaned up over the Marburg Show weekend. Good effort everyone - we banked $4,550 for our school less site fees, cold room hire and ingredients totalling $2650 leaving us with a profit of $1,900. Our Fundraising efforts combined with grants received means we now have $149,320 towards the “Hub Project”. Construction is to begin before the June/July School Holidays and will take approximately 8 weeks to complete. In this newsletter you will find an order form for our Chicken Strip & Chips Tuckshop Day next Friday the 29th. Please ensure the order form and money is returned to school by Tuesday 26th to avoid disappointment. Attached to your Tuckshop Order form in an expression of interest for our upcoming Chocolate Drive. Please complete and return so we have an indication of the number of chocolate boxes we need to order for sale by each and every family next week. Please find attached an updated School Uniform Price List with photos! If you need more uniforms please contact Ashleigh Morriss on 0413 892 265 to place order and make an appointment for collection.
