Kennedy School of 34 Government for the Women in Public Policy Program; at the 35 Women’s Campaign School of Yale University, where she is past 36 president of the board; at the University of South Carolina School 37 of Journalism and Mass Communications; and at the Ethics in 38 Government program of the Thurmond Institute’s Self Civic 39 Fellows program at Clemson University; and 40 41 Whereas, she also works with the International Republican 42 Institute of Washington, D. C., teaching communications training

[4785] 2 1 for civil society around the world, and she was a mentor and 2 trainer for CLIME, the Center for Liberty in the Middle East, 3 helping plant seeds of democracy in the Middle East; and 4 5 Whereas, her active community involvement includes representing 6 the City of Greenville as a Commissioner of Public Works for the 7 Water System, the first woman to hold this position since it was 8 created in 1918; and 9 10 Whereas, a former member of Greenville City Council, Deb 11 Sofield holds one of the highest vote victories in a district city 12 election by overwhelmingly winning every precinct; and 13 14 Whereas, she was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s 15 highest civilian honor, and she was named Communicator of the 16 Year by the Association for Women in Communications; and 17 18 Whereas, she won the prestigious Toastmasters District 58 19 Communication and Leadership Award for the State of South 20 Carolina and was awarded the Strom Thurmond Excellence in 21 Public Service honor; and 22 23 Whereas, the Greenville Chamber of Commerce named her the 24 2005 Athena Award recipient for her work with young people and 25 aspiring politicians; and 26 27 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 28 Representatives are grateful for the pride and recognition that Deb 29 Sofield has brought to her community and to the Palmetto State 30 and for her work that has enabled other women to break barriers. 31 Now, therefore, 32 33 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 34 35 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 36 by this resolution, recognize and honor Deb Sofield, President of 37 Executive Speech & Presentations Coaching Co., for significant 38 contributions in her community, in the State, in the nation, and 39 abroad. 40 41 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 42 Deb Sofield. 43 XX
