. 1490: Panfilo de Narvaez was born in Castile , Spain . He joined the Spanish army and travelled to Jamaica in the New World as a soldier . 1510: Panfilo de Narvaezwas sent by Juan de Esquivel, the governor of Jamaica, to the aid of Alonso de Ojeda, who had been shipwrecked on the coast of Cuba . 1512: Panfilo de Narvaez joined the expedition to Cuba lead by Diego Velazquez de Cuellar . 1520: Panfilo de Narvaez was sent by Diego de Velazquez to Mexico to force Hernando Cortes into submission . 1520: Panfilo de Narvaez was was defeated by Cortes and he was captured and imprisoned in Vera Cruz . 1521:He was released by Cortes and Panfilo de Narvaez returned to Spain . Pamfilo de Narvaez was commissioned by Emperor Carlos V to colonize the entire Gulf Coast of the New World from Florida to Mexico . June 17, 1527: Pamfilo de Narvaez leaves Spain from Cadiz with 300 men, including Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca . The expedition led by Panfilo de Narvaez reach Hispaniola where they stayed for over 1 month . From Hispaniola Panfilo de Narvaez and his expedition travel to Santiago, Cuba on to Trinidad . 1528 April 12: Pamfilo de Narvaez arrives in Florida in the vicinity of Tampa Bay. The men disembark and the land is claimed for Spain . May 1, 1528: Panfilo de Narvaez announces his plans for the expedition to split between land and sea expeditions . The explorations of Panfilo de Naraez were extremely violent. He was looking for gold and took an Indian leader called Ucita as a hostage in order to discover the location of any gold. Ucita and fabricated stories about the fabulous wealth of the Apalachee. He was tortured in order to force him to reveal the location of the 'treasure' and his nose was cut off . Various disasters befall the expedition and finally the expedition which consisted of over 300 men was reduced to just just four men . 1528: Panfilo de Narvaez is drowned during his explorations when a storm capsized his boat .
