EXAMPLE QUESTION: In Scene 2 of Act 3, with what internal conflict does Juliet struggle? Support your answer with evidence from the text. SAMPLE ANSWER The internal conflict with which Juliet struggles in Act 3 Scene 2 is her conflicting emotions about the killing of Tybalt by Romeo’s hand. When the Nurse questions why Juliet continues to defend Romeo even though he killed her cousin, Juliet states, “Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband?”, she is conflicted by the fact that her husband has just killed one of her closest relatives. She does not wish to say anything bad about him because she has constructed a perfect image of Romeo in her mind. She cannot cope with the fact that Romeo might not be the person she thinks he is because that would mean that she may have been mistaken in giving him her heart.

What are two ways that embedding the quotation into a sentence like the author does help to improve the answer? a. b. 5. List one weak element of this evidence:

6. Take a GREEN pen/pencil and underline the EXPLANATION of the writer’s evidence. Label this sentence with a E. 7. How is the author’s explanation in this sentence better than simply restating the answer? (i.e.: This quote proves she’s conflicted about Romeo.) 8. In Scene 6 of Act 2, how does Friar Laurence reveal his concerns about the future of Romeo and Juliet's marriage?

______

9. In Act 2, what is Romeo and Juliet's motivation for rushing into marriage so quickly after declaring their love? Support your answer with evidence from the text.

______

10. By the end of Act 3 Scene 5 how has Juliet’s relationship with the Nurse changed*? Support your answer with evidence from the selection.

*Note: Make note of the fact that the word changed is used in the question. Whenever you encounter a question that uses words like change, develop, grow, compare, or contrast, this is a strong indication that you will need to use more than one piece of evidence in your short answer response. If the question asks you how Juliet’s relationship with the Nurse has changed from the beginning of the play to Act 3 Scene 5, you cannot simply provide evidence from Act 3 because while that may prove what the relationship is like in Act 3, it does not prove how it has changed. For this answer to be complete you must choose quotations from both Acts 1 or 2 (the beginning) and 3 in order to answer the question completely. Otherwise, there is no basis for comparison.
