High Ercall Primary School Class 4 newsletter April 2016.

Dear Parents/Carers, During the summer term KS 2 will be studying the theme ‘Movers and Shakers’ with an historical emphasis on the Ancient Greeks. Class 4 will be focussing on Greek philosophers, achievements and myths and legends. .

In class we are focusing on the following areas:

Literacy Text level: looking at the features of explanation texts and narratives in conjunction with the termly theme. Daily guided reading sessions focusing on reading comprehension and the language features of fiction and non-fiction texts. Spelling: spell words with unstressed vowels; classify words according to their spelling patterns; the correct use of homophones; the apostrophe to denote possession and contractions. Sentence level work: focus on the use of simple, complex and compound sentences and the use of paragraphs

Mathematics During the term pupils will be taught place value; develop a secure written method of calculation for the 4 functions; have rapid recall of times tables (12X12) and know the inverse; know the properties of 2D and 3D shapes including the nets of shapes; know equivalent fractions and improper fractions; convert fractions to decimal fractions and percentages. Underpinning all of these strands will be the opportunity to use and apply these skills in problem solving and reasoning activities.

Science Living things and their environment: Class 4 will be working with Class2 to conduct the very exciting ‘Rocket Science’ investigation. The pupils will be comparing the growth of seeds that that have been in space with seeds on planet Earth.

PSHE /RSE What are some of the ways that people behave in a loving and happy relationship? Explanation of the process of sexual intercourse /making love. Explains about ways people show affection to one another and interviews adults to talk about what they like about their partners in a loving relationship.

P.E. For our physical education and school sport we will be participating in the following activities: cricket, swimming and athletics.

On-going weekly homework activities: . Learn 20 spellings ready for the weekly test. . Daily reading and making entries in their reading journal at least 5 times a week . Daily practise of times tables to ensure rapid recall. . Complete the weekly homework task in the Homework Book. Poetry Slam We are encouraging everybody to read a variety of genre, including poetry. All the children have been asked to learn a poem for our poetry slam competition – the finals are on the last day of the half term. Please help your child to choose and learn a poem – and think about how to perform it!
