Get Better/Work Harder

A Wildcat lacrosse program player is one that can play the game of lacrosse and life “from the neck up”. You do not have to be the most talented player to make the team or play on the field. You do, however, need to have the ability to execute the plan that is prepared for you every day in practice. A Wildcat lacrosse practice is one of hard work, effort, and attention to what is being asked to be accomplished. Those who make the team will be given the opportunity to improve their lacrosse ability, their lacrosse IQ, and their lives. Mistakes will be made, but Wildcat lacrosse provides the opportunity to learn from those mistakes. Players will not have a successful experience if they make the same mistake multiple times.

A Wildcat lacrosse team is also a “palm's down” team. That is a team that does not make excuses. Falling down, a bad pass, a bad call are all things that will happen during a lacrosse season. It is the player who refuses to allow that to impact his next play is the player who will be successful.

“3 things you can control every day: 1. Attitude 2. Effort 3. Actions to be a great teammate.” (Jon Gordon) Expectations

Family 1, School 2, Lacrosse 3

Family  Family comes first.  Tell your family you love them.  Allow them to help you with your schedule demands.  Let them know the high demands of a great education and a great lacrosse program.  Be helpful around the house and show your appreciation of what they do for you.  Be responsible for yourself.

School  You represent your family and team everywhere you go.  Get to all your classes and arrive for them on time.  Hand in all your assignments.  Be respectful when you talk to your teachers and school aides.  Absolutely zero bullying.  Go to get extra help.

Lacrosse  Show your interest by getting to all things lacrosse throughout the year.  Missing any in-season lacrosse activity is unacceptable unless there is a health, school, or family emergency.  Missing any in-season activity for a non-emergency may result in dismissal from team.  Prepare for practice so you have all equipment and clothing required.  Arrive on time for practice/ If you are late we will assume you don’t care.  Come to the field ready to work.  Strive to get the most out of every play of every drill of every day.  Be prepared for the physical and the mental expectations and demands.  Enjoy your high school lacrosse experience.

Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship is a demonstration of generosity and genuine concern for others. It is a concrete measure of the understanding and commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity. Sportsmanship is a blending of cheers for “your team” and applause for the “opponents,” observing the letter and spirit of the rules, and showing consideration for others. Sportsmanship is the “golden rule” of athletics – treating others as you wish to be treated. Practice Plan Example

Summer – Maintain continuity of our program:  Attend 1 – 2 Showcase Lacrosse camps if interested.  Play on a club team (we will offer a JV and Varsity team for the summer)  Maintain strength and conditioning regimen.

Fall:  Participate in other sports if interested.  Lake Norman HS Lacrosse program: typically consists of two teams that attend 3 tournaments (one practice per week if you are not a team member of another Lake Norman HS Sport).  Continue strength and conditioning regimen.

Winter – The most crucial part of our off-season:  Polar Bear Winter Lacrosse Program (we will typically field a JV and Varsity team)  Complete strength and conditioning regimen.  Field conditioning Captain’s practices.  9-man Coaches practices.

Youth Lacrosse – Lake Norman United Lacrosse is a feeder program for Lake Norman High School Lacrosse. We will jointly promote each other in our community thru mentoring and supporting each other’s organizations.

 We will try to do a practice and invite the youth coaches.  We may have one day where we go to the middle school and discuss bullying.  We will continue all of our mentoring.

140 Raceway Drive; Mooresville, NC Wall Ball Fact

“15 Minutes per day”

15 minutes per day for 365 days per year equals 91.25 hours of practice time

A varsity team practices 2 hours per day for roughly 25 days over the course of the regular season. That means that by working for 15 minutes a day during the year doing wall ball, a player will get twice as much practice time as you get during the season. This does not even take into account for how little a player actually has a ball in his stick during a 2 hour varsity practice.

So if a player hits the wall for 15 minutes a day, and can throw a ball 25 times against the wall every minute that would result in 375 passes per day. That would be 137,000 passes per year

There are 22 minutes of commercials in an hour long television show. That would be over 200,000 passes per year.

SO HIT THE WALL Recruiting Tips and Pointers

 Today college programs are using the summer for recruiting

 Join a summer team - There are a number of teams available - Pick a team that fits your schedule the best

 Attend 1 or 2 show case camps - There are a number of showcases to choose from - The top level ones are for just a handful of kids from our section - Find one that seems to fit the level of school you would be a good fit for

 After attending these showcases and playing for a club team you may receive a number of letters from schools. These letters are terrific to receive. Understand that there are hundreds of other kids that are receiving the same letters for what will be only a handful of spots.

 Find the programs that you are interested in and contact the coaching staff - Find out what camps they will be at or what showcases they run and attend - Show as much interest as you can in the program you would like to attend. They are looking at hundreds of kids. You are recruiting them. Learn about their program: who they play, who are the coaches, how they did last season, etc. - Note what players that play your position will be still on the team when you get there, so you can get an idea of how and if you may fit in.

 Keep in mind that recruiting camps and teams do not help you work on your game. If you want to play in college, the best thing you can do is get better at your own game.

 One percent of all college players are receiving scholarship money to play. When it is reported that a player has committed to a school, in most instances that player has decided to attend that school and the coach will be giving him the opportunity to try out for the team. Hopefully, lacrosse ability may help you get into a school that would be a reach, but getting the best grades you can in the class room can do as much or more.

 Play multiple sports. The first question college coaches as are what are his grades? The second question is what other sports does he play? The third question is what kind of kid is he? Then they ask about his lacrosse ability. Be a good athlete, student, citizen, and lacrosse player.
