1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO HONOR AND COMMEND AUSTIN AND SALLY 12 BROWN, OF CAMDEN, FOR THEIR DECADES OF 13 SELFLESS EFFORT AND ONGOING COMMITMENT TO THE 14 CITY OF CAMDEN AND KERSHAW COUNTY, RESULTING 15 IN IMMEASURABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE 16 BETTERMENT OF LIFE FOR ALL WHO LIVE THERE, AND 17 TO WISH THEM MUCH HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS IN ALL 18 THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS. 19 20 Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly 21 recognizes individuals who are dedicated to giving of themselves 22 to improve the quality of life for the citizens of South Carolina; 23 and 24 25 Whereas, Austin and Sally Brown, beloved Camdenites who have 26 lived more than half a century in Camden, are extraordinary 27 examples of such dedicated individuals, worthy of tribute for their 28 immeasurable contributions and selfless giving of their time and 29 talents to both Camden and Kershaw County; and 30 31 Whereas, the Browns have been tireless supporters and devoted 32 workers of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County. As Chairman 33 of the Center’s Board, Mr. Brown demonstrated compelling 34 leadership, wisdom, and style and was instrumental in developing 35 a substantial donor network. Together Mr. and Mrs. Brown 36 assumed the role of host and hostess for the center, and today the 37 center prospers in many respects due to their vision and example; 38 and 39 40 Whereas, Sally, the quintessential lady, with abundant charm and 41 grace, has displayed her acting talent at the Fine Arts Center and in 42 community theatre, with stellar performances in roles as diverse as

1 [3489] 1 1 Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady and Maxine, a raucous character in 2 The Dayporch, which went on to tour the Southeast. Austin, a 3 former Boston Marathoner, has delighted audiences with his 4 shapely legs in male revue fundraisers for the Center; and 5 6 Whereas, while serving on the United Way of Kershaw County 7 Board of Directors, Austin Brown was chairman of several United 8 Way Leadership Giving drives, and his personal philanthropy, 9 paired with his true caring spirit and persuasive fund-raising 10 prowess, helped to significantly increase Leadership Giving; and 11 12 Whereas, during Sally Brown’s years of active service on the 13 Kershaw County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, she 14 drew many influential donors into the work of the Board, her 15 insight and nurturing heart guiding her service during a period of 16 the board’s greatest expansion of programs and services; and 17 18 Whereas, Mr. Brown, an avid supporter of steeplechase, has had a 19 long and distinguished career in the sport as a rider, trainer, owner, 20 and race steward and as a dedicated member of many local and 21 national steeplechase organizations, including being elected to the 22 prestigious Board of the National Steeplechase Foundation in 23 2004; and 24 25 Whereas, bringing his expertise and passion for steeplechase to 26 Camden, Mr. Brown spearheaded the effort to build the National 27 Steeplechase Museum in Camden and has dedicated great effort to 28 making the Carolina Cup Races and Colonial Cup Races 29 successful and nationally competitive, with the end result of 30 ever-increasing gifts to the Kershaw County Medical Center; and 31 32 Whereas, Mrs. Brown, who shares her husband’s love of horses 33 and who herself has been a bold and talented rider, has served as 34 the Master of Fox Hounds for the Camden Hunt, and together the 35 Browns have parleyed their passion into promoting the equestrian 36 community in Camden; and 37 38 Whereas, it is proper and fitting for the members of the General 39 Assembly to recognize and honor such exceptional South 40 Carolinians as Sally and Austin Brown whose love and devotion to 41 one another and whose partnership and support of each other’s 42 worthy endeavors have contributed in myriad ways to life in South 43 Carolina. Now, therefore,

1 [3489] 2 1 2 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 3 concurring: 4 5 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 6 resolution, honor and commend Austin and Sally Brown, of 7 Camden, for their decades of selfless effort and ongoing 8 commitment to the City of Camden and Kershaw County to the 9 betterment of life for all who live there, and wish them much 10 happiness and success in all their future endeavors. 11 12 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 13 Austin and Sally Brown. 14 ----XX---- 15
