Stratos Optical Reaches 50,000 Unit Milestone With Miniature, Harsh Environment OEO Transceivers – Product series satisfies OEM market demand for high speed, ruggedized optical component –
CHICAGO, IL (November 5, 2007) --- Stratos Optical Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Emerson Network Power Connectivity Solutions, announced shipment of the 50,000th miniature, harsh- environment optical transceiver in calendar Q4 of 2007. This product series was developed by Stratos to satisfy the specialized need of military communication networks designers, specifically fast Ethernet and avionics AFDX applications. Stratos Low Rider and Rough Rider series provides a high performance, ultra small profile solution for data rates up to 4 Gbps in a military harsh environment.
At half the size of standard MSA telecom products, these pluggable electronic-to-optical (OEO) transceivers - commonly referred to as the “Low Rider” and “Rough Rider” - are hardened and otherwise designed to provide reliable normal contact performance under the stress of high vibration and military temperature extremes.
The product line includes fiber pigtail options, dual transmit and dual receive devices, and a new “pluggable” version that offers a significant advantage for mass population PCB volume-soldering technology. Unique to the Stratos Low Rider Pluggable product design, a separable interconnect cage can be independently soldered to the PCB without the transceiver, eliminating risk to the active component. The transceiver is inserted into the cage after the soldering process is concluded.
The 50K shipment milestone is testament to the market acceptance of these products, particularly the high volume manufacturing methods enabled by the pluggable design that have resulted in cost savings to military end-users. These transceivers are fully compliant with the IEEE Ethernet and ANSI Fibre Channel standards, but can be used for a variety of data communication applications within their operating parameters.
“Stratos has a rich heritage of collaboration with industry-leading OEM’s in the area of form-factor innovation of military optical components and subsystems,” according to John Bohlin, engineering manager at Stratos Optical. “Where weight and overall equipment size is constrained, the Stratos miniature transceiver series enables military system designers to leverage the advantages of a small footprint alternative to full size transceivers.”
