Photocopy the Object Lesson Topics Below Onto Stiff Card

Object Lesson

This is an oral language activity that can equally be done with younger and older children, with children of less and more ability. Omit topics as desired according to the age group you’re teaching and the ability level of the children.

 Photocopy the “Object Lesson” topics below onto stiff card  Cut up into small cards and place in an “Object Lesson” box  These are short topics for talking about so they shouldn’t need any great preparation  The rule when selecting topics is: you may replace a topic if you don’t like it, but then you must stick with your second selection (this makes children think twice about replacing a card)  The basic rule for this lesson is that pupils must discuss/explain what the object on the card is/does without mentioning the name of the object. The class should try to guess the object on the card. Guesses are only allowed after three clues have been given by the speaker. Try to encourage pupils not to be very obvious and give the name of the object away too quickly. As children become more experienced at this activity they will become more clever with clues. You

It should also be stressed that guesses must not be shouted out. Devise a system that works for your own classroom for this.  Pupils could stand in their place or at the top of the room when speaking – this will give them experience of speaking in front of an audience  What you are aiming for in this activity is fostering confidence in speaking in front of an audience, clear and audible speech, fluency of speech and clarity of thought  If pupils would be comfortable and confident, think about varying the audience for the speaker – an audience of another class, a school audience (perhaps at assembly), an audience of parents  Lastly, make sure the activity is fun and that the children enjoy themselves
