August 5, 2009

• We expect Lukas to attend one Rotary Club meeting each month, on the first Wednesday, at 6:30, at the Kutztown Tavern. I will plan to pick him up around 6pm and will bring him home after the meeting, unless other arrangements need to be made. You are always welcome to come as well. The cost of the meal is $15 per person. The club has a budget for Lukas’ meals.

• At the monthly club meeting, Lukas will receive his “allowance” of $100/month. It is to be used as supplemental funds for things like lunch money or movies, etc. He should have a budget from his parents for his own discretionary purchases. You, however, will find yourself paying for some things as well, like entrance fees when the family is on an outing, because you will otherwise feel awkward and a little impolite paying for the family and then asking the exchange student to pony up separately. The $100 will be in the form of a check. He may need you to help him set up a local bank account in order to cash it, or you may be willing to cash it for him.

• The club members are encouraged to invite Lukas to events they plan to attend such as sports events, concerts, etc. I will ask them to make the invitation to Lukas via the host parents, so there is no confusion. You are also encouraged to invite him to participate in your activities although he may not be staying with your family at the time. It will ease his transition between families.

• I consider it my responsibility to make sure Lukas gets a ride to all mandatory District events. I will not be able to shuttle him myself every time. Frankly, I have trouble seeing perspective on the roadways after nightfall and try not to drive after dark, which is extremely limiting in the winter. If you are able to help at any time, please volunteer. Regarding the December 28 holiday event, if (Messersmiths) are planning to travel on that date and planning to take Lukas with you, let me know the details in advance and I will talk to Patti Smith and Mary Cook (District Inbound Chair) about permissions.

• The club YEP counselor is expected to make spot visits with Lukas and the host family regularly. Therefore, I may call at the last minute to just stop by if it is convenient. But generally, I will be meeting this obligation when I pick him up for club meetings and District events.
