PCAV National Mounted Games Information, Criteria and Scoring

For selection to the 2012 State Team

General Information & Criteria

Candidates should have an understanding of the goals of the National Exchange:

. It is a national cultural exchange to make new friends, to learn about people, customs and culture from other states. . It is considered an educational experience. . The exchange facilitates horse related fun and competition

To be considered for selection to the Victorian National Mounted Games Team pony club members must meet the following requirements

 Junior Team Must be a current financial pony club member Be under 16 years on 01 January in the year of the competition.  Senior Team Must be a current financial pony club member at the time of the competition and meet the PCAV age criteria  Meet any associated costs of team training during the year  Meet the uniform, travel and accommodation costs associated with the team competition.(PCAV subsidy will be determined from year to year)  Be an active member of pony club with a strong record of service to their pony club and community.  Participate in the annual PCAV - NMG Selection Trials  Have attained their “C” Certificate  Demonstrate a commitment to a personal fitness and nutrition program  Attend all scheduled training, competition and fitness sessions  Bring a horse to each training session  If injured, a medical clearance must be provided prior to re commencing riding with the squad or team  Additional Qualities the selectors will consider o Strong riding capability on a variety of horses o Excellent horse care skills o Personal qualities that would make them a good ambassador for PCAV and or APCC o Demonstrated high standards of behaviour, maturity and independence. o Support for the Pony Club ideals of sportsmanship

 Will be called upon to take a place in the team if any one of the other five riders is injured and unable to ride prior to the team departing for the national competition.  Is expected to train with the team until the competition  Will be invited to the final team training camp, but attendance is optional. The reserve rider may assist with un mounted activities, but will not ride.  Is unable to travel with or be accommodated with the team when they are at the National Competition  May purchase the entire team uniform, but must purchase the Team Jacket and polo shirt

Senior Team Riders & Senior Reserve Rider

 Are considered team members from the time of their selection until the conclusion of the Skills training clinic on the last weekend in January in the year following their selection to the team  Are expected to coach at the Annual Skills Training Clinic in the year following their selection to the team.  Are expected to be available to ride in demonstration events or invitational competitions throughout the year of their selection  Are expected to be available to coach at various club and zone clinics throughout the year of their selection and following year

Team Captains

 Will be elected by other team members at either the first or second training session after team selection ( A Duty Statement for the Team Captain is available)

Scoring State Team Each candidate will be scored by each selector in all the categories All selectors’ scores will be totaled in each category and then the categories will be totaled for final score. The candidates with the five highest scores will make up the State Team The sixth highest score will be the reserve rider for the State Team. In the event of a tie for 5th or sixth place, the Chairperson of Selectors will break the tie. The Chairperson may seek further advice and or information from other selectors and/or the coach. If a selector is unable to give a score, the candidate will receive a score which is the average of other selectors’ scores for that category.

Notification of Team Within seven days following the selection trials each candidate will be sent:

A rider’s selection score is based on three components providing a maximum total score of 76 points –

 riding and games skills (max 60 points)  squad performance (max 8 points)  attendance (max 8 points)

Our aim is to select representative riders who are safe, capable and ambassadors who can confidently and happily interact with their peers and officials

A. RIDING AND GAMES SKILLS (MAXIMUM OF 60 POINTS)

1. VAULTING (max 10 points) Vaulting is the ability to leap into the saddle without the use of a stirrup.

Candidates should be able to vault safely and easily onto a horse or pony appropriate to the rider’s weigh and height. Emphasis will be placed on near (left) side vaulting, but the candidate should be able to demonstrate the ability to vault from the off (right) side as well, both in drills and actual games.

2. DUNKING (max 10 points) Dunking is the ability to pick up objects, whether by hand or by a piece of games equipment and deposit them into or onto another piece of games equipment.

Candidates should be able, at speed, to safely and easily accomplish these tasks without error.

3. SPEED (max 10 points) Speed is the ability to ride the games at a fast pace while maintaining control of the mount and accurately performing games skills. It also relates to adjusting the speed in consideration of the progress of the game and the temperament of the mount.

Candidates should demonstrate a willingness and ability to perform the games at a rapid pace, while maintaining control of the pony and be able to adjust their speed according to the progress of the game and the temperament of their mount.

4. HANDOFFS (max 10 points) Handing off is the ability to deliver or receive a piece of games equipment whilst maintaining control of the mount.

Candidates should be able to keep their mount straight and have their mount moving forward while taking or giving a handoff.

5. SKILLS ACCURACY CONSISTENCY (max 10 points) Accuracy and consistency are the abilities to perform games uniformly through repeated demonstrations of the skills.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the games skills in a highly accurate, capable and consistent manner, on a variety of mounts throughout the entire riding selection process. Candidates should also demonstrate that they can not only perform games skills without error and at speed, but also safely, taking into consideration the skills of other candidates and the mounts provided.

6. GENERAL HORSE CARE (max 10 points) General horsemanship is the ability to ride consistently well, over an extended period of time, demonstrating the characteristics of a balanced seat, kind hands and a tactful manner with each mount ridden together with care and concern for the mount.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate these skills through their general riding, games riding and demeanor through the selection process. Abuse of the mount would be severely penalized and could mean the candidate is ineligible for selection.

B. SQUAD PERFORMANCE (max 8 points) Squad Coach’s Report

This will be determined in the coach’s report on observations during the time the candidate spends with the Training Squad

1. SPORTSMANSHIP Sportsmanship is the ability to maintain good humour and a cheerful attitude in all situations and circumstances.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate a genuine feeling of sportsmanship throughout their teamwork, demeanor and deportment during the selection trials.

2. SOCIAL PRESENTATION & GENERAL IMPRESSION Social presentation is the ability to interact with peers and adults in a variety of circumstances in a mature, confident and friendly manner.

3. SQUAD PERFORMANCE Observations of skill development and attitude and teamwork over the squad training sessions and competitions.

4. PERSONAL FITNESS Observations on and indicators of the development and improvement of personal fitness

C. ATTENDANCE (max 8 points) Candidates are expected to attend all scheduled squad training sessions, fitness assessments and competitions prior to team selection and then all team training sessions and competitions.

8 points will be allocated for perfect squad attendance.  Riders are expected to be punctual and remain for the entire duration of each scheduled event. Should there be any variation; contact must be made with their coach. (Points will be deducted for any breach)  If a rider is injured they should still attend the session un mounted and provide their coach with prior advise.  If a rider is unwell provide their coach with prior advice.  Riders will be permitted to miss one scheduled session without any loss of selection points.  1 point will be deducted for late arrival or early departure from any scheduled session  1 point will be deducted for any absence for any reason when prior advice is given to the coach  3 points will be deducted for any absence when no advice is given to the coach

Should any absence be repeated the points lost will be doubled. (ie. 1st absence lose 1, 2nd absence lose 2 = total 3, 3rd absence lose 4 = total 7) Should candidates lose 8 points they will not be eligible for team selection and will be required to withdraw from the squad.

Team member’s absence: Team members are expected to attend all training sessions and competitions.
