Creating a new organisation

In November 2010 Manchester City Council Executive Committee agreed to fund the development of a new £19m purpose built cultural centre on the First Street site in Manchester. All the funding is in place and a Design Team led by Dutch architects practice, Mecanoo, have already begun the process of drawing up detailed plans for the Centre which is currently scheduled to open in 2014. This exciting new building will become home to Cornerhouse and The Library Theatre Company, two of Manchester’s key cultural organisations, who will be merging in April 2012 to create a GMAC (working name), an entirely new, production based multi-artform organisation.

It is currently proposed that the new venue will include a 500 seat theatre, 120-150 seat flexible theatre space , 600m2 gallery space, 5 cinema screens, education spaces, digital production and broadcast facilities, café bar, restaurant, offices and other ancillary spaces consistent with a production centre, a making place – intimately concerned with providing new opportunities for artists and audiences to create work differently.

The new organisation will:  build on the heritage and track record of both organisations  have a clearly articulated artistic vision  look to the future to create a fit for purpose contemporary multi-artform production focused arts organisation  have a robust and sound business model  be audience focused, open and an artistic and business innovator.

This opportunity has emerged because of the Manchester City Council’s Cultural Ambition strategy that sets out the importance of culture to the city and the City Council’s ambitious approach to the cultural sector.

Our ambition for the new organisation

The creative teams of both organisations have worked together to create a draft artistic vision and set of core values for GMAC:

Artistic vision:

By 2014 GMAC will be an international contemporary multi-artform organisation producing and presenting excellent world-class work, an engine- room for creative adventure, artistic excellence, and audience engagement for the people of Manchester, the North West and the UK. GMAC will play a leading national role in innovation, risk taking and digital audience engagement through integrated, interdisciplinary and open practice working with visual art, theatre and film and will be recognised as entrepreneurial and a model collaborator.

Page 3 of 9 Greater Manchester Arts Centre Ltd About the Library Theatre Company

The Library Theatre Company was founded in 1952 and is the major producer of contemporary drama in the North West. Since its inception it has been directly managed by Manchester City Council but this of course will change with the merger with Cornerhouse in April next year. LTC has:  Produced numerous U.K. and world premieres  Championed contemporary playwrights  Co-produced with national and regional companies such as Out of Joint, Rasa, and Lip Service  Driven an innovatory participation programme engaging neglected and disadvantaged communities  Nurtured emerging regional theatre companies through the RePlay festival  Presented significant international work particularly from Australasia and North America.  Won or been nominated for over thirty Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards in the last seven years.  Produced a hugely popular play for families and children every Christmas

The Company has been in transition since leaving its base at the Library Theatre in July 2010 and establishing its new city centre home in 2014, in partnership with Cornerhouse. It currently produces three major productions a year at the Lowry (including a Christmas slot), a diverse participation programme from it’s temporary base at the Zion Arts Centre and a three year programme of innovative ‘event’ style theatre in non-theatre spaces in the city, e.g. Hard Times by Charles Dickens in an Ancoats mill, a performance commissioned from Jackie Kay which will be about all kinds of journeys, and a rave party invaded by the Peterloo Massacre.
