E-Learning Brief summary:

Technology has transformed almost every aspect of life from how people work in offices to how entertainment is consumed at home.

Technology has now reached a point where it is so easy to use that it can start to be effectively applied in mainstream education. At home, our students have access to a multitude of different devices from PC’s to mobile phones which they could be using to help them with their studies across all subjects.

Tips for parents:

1) Using the Internet for research. The Internet can be a fantastic and sometimes overwhelming source of information, which can make finding the right source tricky. Search engines such as Google offer a range of advanced features which make it much easier to refine your results. These include searching for specific file types, pages within a specific time frame, particular sized images. Knowing how to use these features will allow you to search more efficiently. A good starting point is to use http://www.google.co.uk/advanced_search which will guide you through using the advanced search features.

2) iamlearning.co.uk All students at Tuxford Academy have access to the iamlearning website. It provides materials for all subjects studied in school. It is also designed to work on mobile devices as well as computers ensuring revision can be undertaken anywhere. Homework is regularly set for students on iamlearning.

3) Apps for Learning Both the AppStore (Apple devices) and Google Play (Android devices) offer a wealth of apps which can help with the exploration of topics covered in lessons and with revision. There are many apps which are suitable for specific subjects which staff many be able to help you with. Below are some which would be useful for any subject.  CGP revision guides. This app provides a series of quiz type activities for a number of different subject including Core and Additional Sciences, which are based on the student revision guides.  iamlearning – To complement the full website access. This app allows students to access the activities from the iamlearning website. It contains a complete resource bank of class activities and quizzes.  iMindMap – This app has a large range of templates to help with mind mapping topics quickly and easily. Useful for breaking down revision notes into topics or planning essays.  RevisionAid - This app lets you build your own quiz of any topic made of text or multiple choice questions. Questions are generated in a random order each time the test is taken.

4) Using YouTube YouTube has many videos created by both students and teachers which explain content and will help with completing revision of topics at home. Sometimes having another person explain a topic can make it suddenly clear. As an example, searching within YouTube for “What is Binary” or “Why did Germany lose WW2” brings up a large number of videos which explain the topics in a number of different ways.
