Rampaging Chariots

A challenging engineering project aimed at interesting young people in engineering by involving them in an exciting social and technology learning project to construct radio controlled sporting robots to compete in a National competition.

The aim of our project is to interest young people in the fun of technology and engineering through the construction and operation of a powerful featherweight sporting robot to compete in the Assault Course, Sumo and 2-a-Side Football Competitions at the Scottish and UK Robotic Games. The project is aimed at young people aged 13 to 18 from youth organisations and school clubs.

The Scottish Robotic Games will be held at SELEX Galileo, Crew Toll, Edinburgh in June 2013.

Our project educates young people involved in citizenship, project management, leadership, personal discipline, engineering, science, electronics and mathematics. It also teaches important social skills such as how to work as a team to achieve a challenging goal. The radio controlled sporting robots weigh about 10kg and are big and powerful enough not to be considered as toys.

The innovative design is based on cannibalising two 18-volt cordless electric drills and constructing two sophisticated electronic motor controllers, which the young people make themselves from electronic components and a printed circuit board. A team of 4 or 5 can construct a Rampaging Chariot in about 12 hours. A comprehensive instruction manual is provided.

The Rampaging Chariots Guild comprises volunteer engineers and graduates from SELEX GALILEO Edinburgh who are the primary sponsors of the project which is also supported by the IET. Thanks to IET funding, each new school/Young Engineers Club joining the project will be supplied with one free kit with the possibility of an additional free kit upon successful completion of the first. Note that due to high demand schools which already have kits are limited to one additional kit during any school year. The SELEX Galileo volunteers then act as mentors to provide advice and assistance to the youth groups during the construction and testing phase.

School clubs who would like to construct and complete a Rampaging Chariot are requested to complete the enclosed application form. Robotic Games Would you like your powerful radio controlled robot to play in a two-a-side Football Tournament and compete in an Assault Course and Sumo Competition? Then make sure you come along to the Robotic Games in Edinburgh in June 2014. At the games, the robots will race through a series of obstacles including a see-saw and score a penalty goal. Also, in conjunction with another Team, play two-a-side football for 3 minutes. This project is challenging, but hugely rewarding. You will need to work as a team to produce a robot that has a very sporty performance and is not a toy. The annual Scottish Robotic Games assault course and football tournament will provide a major challenge and an exciting climax to your project. Your construction task (which will take a team about 12 hours) is to:  Build a chassis using the MDF and other parts supplied as a complete kit.  Construct two electronic motor controllers from a kit (requiring soldering skills).  Dismantle two cordless electric drills  Install in the chassis: two drill motors, four wheels, two batteries, radio receiver and aerial.  Wire up the components and test your robotic creation. You will not be on your own. We supply a comprehensive instruction manual and have a team of 10 volunteer young graduate engineers who will be allocated as your mentor and trouble-shooter. If your School or Club wants to build a Rampaging Chariot, apply for sponsored kits, which include radio control equipment. Note 1: Entries must be largely built by the young people themselves although assistance from a staff member is permitted. Note 2: Team members must be under 18 years of age at the time of the competition. Note 3: We are considering a separate limited competition for older participants (over 17), which would require them to modify the Rampaging Chariot for Autonomous Operation
