Grade 1 – Unit 5: More Addition and Subtraction Strategies

In this unit your child will work to build an understanding of the following:  Related addition and subtraction facts o Students will use the Commutative Property of Addition (changing the order of the addends will result in the same sum) to help build fact fluency. o The inverse relationship between addition and subtraction can make memorizing number facts easier for children. o A fact family is a group of related addition and subtraction facts. . Example: 3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 – 3 = 4, and 7 – 4 = 3 . There are only two related number sentences for a doubles fact: 5 + 5 = 10 and 10 – 5 = 5

 The meaning of the equal sign o The concept of equality is an essential foundation of algebraic understanding. o It is important to understand that the equal sign tells that the quantities on both sides are equivalent in value. Students should think of the equal sign as meaning “has the same value as.” o Guide your child away from thinking that the equal sign signifies an answer is being requested. When a sum is presented first in an equation, as in 9 = 3 + 6, many children see this as a false equation. Help your child to see that it can be thought of as 9 is the same as 3 + 6, and therefore be true. o Equations are balanced when both sides of the equal sign have the same value. . For example: 5 + 6 = 7 + 4 . Students will use this concept to solve for missing numbers. 13 = 9 + ?
