Timings for the Day (Tuesday, 17th July)
08.45 - 9.00 Arrive at Ecclesbourne School 09.00 – 9.20 Briefing for the day in 6th form centre: Welcome, introductions, housekeeping, rationale for day. 09.30 – 10.10 Session 1 10.20 – 11.00 Session 2 11.10 – 11.50 Session 3 11.50 – 12.40 Lunch – in 6th form centre 12.40 – 01.20 Session 4 01.30 – 02.10 Session 5 02.20 – 02.40 Plenary in 6th form centre – careers + evaluation Sessions A Pure Differentiation Alex Pryor/Sarah Rafferty B Mechanics Momentum Tom Walton C Statistics Binomial Distribution Jon Stratford D Further Pure Matrices Malcolm Knight E Decisions Networks Chris Brailsford Schools Participating: Belper, Ecclesbourne, John Flamsteed, Mill Hill.
Key Decisions 15 delegates from each school, 5 groups, 3 pupils per group. (Groups arranged in advance) Pupils not required to wear school uniform, but will have a name badge. Each group to attend sessions on a rota. Briefing in 6th form centre, sessions to be in maths rooms. Some re-rooming might be necessary – Rita to check. Sessions will teach an aspect of ‘A’ level maths using interactive strategies. ie practical work, ICT, group work, work in progress posters, etc. Assessment of learning might also include A4 white boards, traffic light cards. Looking for more than explain, example, exercise (XXX) If possible each session to have ‘Objectives, starter, main, plenary’ Each session to have a ‘mathematical puzzle/problem’ to be solved – prize for first correct solution out of hat – not necessarily related to the main activity – pupils to work on during intervals. (email problem/puzzle to [email protected]) Lunch arrangements – Rita to check possibility of providing sandwiches and drink in 6th form centre. Jon to arrange funding. Jon to enlist ‘industry ambassadors’ for the careers session – through STEM. Pupil (and staff) evaluation at end of day – Jon to prepare.
