OSCE INFORMATION

Your Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation (OSCE) is on the last Thursday of the clerkship in the Simulation Center.

The OSCE will consist of:  Six 20-minute stations o Three patient encounters o One CXR and EKG station o One written station o One ultrasound station  Three patient encounters o May include history taking, physical examination, and/or patient counseling o Take instruction sheet from door pocket . Will tell you exactly what to do o These stations may be related to later written tasks . Would be wise to take brief notes o 20 minutes total per station . 15 minutes for history, exam, counseling . 5 minutes for feedback (notified by knock)  At that time the standardized patient (SP) will review checklist . Will notify you again when 20 minutes is up—move on to next station o Leave paperwork in the room with SPs  One CXR and EKG station o 20 minutes to complete both tasks . Look through materials and budget your time . We will provide you with a diagram of the EKG axis . Will notify you after 15 minutes has passed . Will notify you at 20 minutes to move on to next station o Inside the room, there are packets that include instructions and forms . Only exception—CXR is on the computer o Can take packet with you at end of station . Can use any extra time at your written station to work on it  One Written Station o 20 minutes to complete two written tasks . Will notify you after 15 minutes has passed . Will notify you at 20 minutes to end session o Tasks may be related to prior patient encounters . Might want to take brief notes at prior stations o I will give you a packet with instructions and forms o Go to exam room and get to work  One Ultrasound Station o Start as a typical patient encounter o Take history, perform physical exam, perform ultrasound exam o Complete the checklist for ultrasound imaging  Bring a stethoscope and a reflex hammer. Any other tools will be provided if needed.
