DENVER BRONCOS QUOTES (11/2/17)

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JOE WOODS

On whether the defense will move away from playing man-coverage against Philadelphia “Really, it’s the same thing I said before. We try to do a combination of zone, man and pressure. You try to affect them in terms of them running through zones. We have some coverages where you can bang them and double-team them. Then you just try to go get the quarterback. With that combination, you hope you can have success. Against K.C., it didn’t work that good. We had two busted coverages and then really poor technique on the touchdown. We just have to improve in those areas, but that will be the plan.”

On defensive players’ frustration “We have a competitive group of guys. I know they made some comments, but they’re like that every day. Ever since I’ve been here for three years, that hasn’t changed. It’s offense, defense—defense, offense. The only thing that we can be concerned about is what we can do defensively. The thing I tell them is, as long as we have a blade of grass, we can go play defense. We can’t control the circumstances in terms of how we get on the field. But, once we get out there, we can prevent those guys form scoring. That’s our job.”

On the turnovers forced against Kansas City “It was good. We definitively want to get turnovers, just to change the feel for the offense, to give them a short field and to change the momentum of the game. It’s demoralizing to a defense when that happens. It’s good to get those two turnovers. It was effort. They tried us on a trick play. ‘Stew’ (S Darian Stewart) did a good job staying back, but if felt good to finally get a couple.”

On the amount of snaps OLB Shane Ray played against Kansas City “We were going to play him until he said he couldn’t play. That was basically the plan. He was chomping at the bit to get out there. I thought he came back this offseason just a different mentality. He cut his dreads off. It’s not that that means anything, but it was kind of like he matured. You could see the maturity. It was good to get him back out there. He’ll keep getting better each and every week.”

On Eagles QB Carson Wentz “He’s a big guy. He can make all the throws. He has great touch on his deep ball. Guys just bounce off of him in the pocket. I know guys compare him to [Steelers QB] Ben Roethlisberger and I see why. He is a good young quarterback. It’s only going to get better. He’s doing a hell of a job right now.”

On the mindset of the defense “I would like to say that we get up for anybody that we play. That’s kind of the mindset week in and week out. It’s just the next team up that we’re playing against. These guys know it’s a challenge for us just in terms of what’s happened to us these last couple weeks. We want to go out and play really well against the run and pass and create turnovers to get out of there with a win.”
