You are required to read two books at your individual reading level per four-week cycle. That’s a book every two weeks. The first book is to be in the specific genre outlined above. The second book is your choice. This reading is a large part of your reading grade. Every four weeks you’ll earn a grade for this four-week period. The grade is half for the completed reading log and half for the vocabulary post-it notes. Requirements for these grades are outlined below:

 The Reading Log: You must have the log completely filled out for each book. It must show that you have read each day during our classroom sustained silent reading period. You are required to read each evening Monday – Thursday at home as part of homework. A parent signature is required for at home reading. Parent signatures are not required for sustained silent reading or for the section marked “other” on the log. You may use Friday-Sunday nights to make up for any times your skipped reading Monday-Thursday evenings. See a sample log on the reverse side. Look at the length of your book and plan on how many pages you’ll need to read per day in order to finish on time. Choose your next book before you’ve completed the book you are currently reading. If you challenge yourself to a longer book then you’ll only have to read one book. I have to approve these.

 Vocabulary Development: You will develop vocabulary based on the books you read. As you read each of these books, use post-it notes to record vocabulary. Vocabulary word should be in the middle of the post-it with a brief definition or synonym underneath. The page number is in the upper right corner and the criteria in the lower left corner. Post-its for each book are attached to the log when the log is due. Ten to twenty post-its should be included on a log for each book. You will choose twelve of these words to study and incorporate into your written and spoken vocabulary. The criteria and (code) for choosing vocabulary is as follows:

1. Words you had difficulty decoding (D) 2. Words you didn’t fully understand the meaning of (M) 3. Words that the author used that were especially descriptive. You liked the author’s choice of vocabulary. (A)
