MCCANTS ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT 13 FROM CITY COUNCIL, TO THANK HIM FOR HIS MANY 14 YEARS OF OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE 15 PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH 16 SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HIS FUTURE 17 ENDEAVORS. 18 19 Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the South 20 Carolina House of Representatives honor individuals who give of 21 their time and resources for the good of others; and 22 23 Whereas, Goose Creek City Council member John B. McCants has 24 contributed twentyfour years of valuable public service to the 25 citizens of the Palmetto State and is thereby worthy of praise; and 26 27 Whereas, having moved to Goose Creek in 1973, Mr. McCants 28 became a respected community resident and was elected a member 29 of Goose Creek City Council in April 1992. Since then, he has 30 served in that capacity with distinction. He will retire in April 31 2016; and 32 33 Whereas, in preparation for his career, this Gable native earned an 34 associate degree in business marketing and public service from 35 Trident Technical Community College and attended Morris 36 College; and 37 38 Whereas, now retired from the U.S. Army as a sergeant first class, 39 he served in his country’s armed forces for more than two decades. 40 His years in the military took him to Vietnam, where he served 41 from 1967 to 1969; and 42

[5285] 2 1 Whereas, stateside, he worked as a building inspector in Goose 2 Creek and then worked in Charleston County, where he assisted in 3 writing grants that provided funding for lowincome families to 4 build and repair homes. He retired in 1998; and 5 6 Whereas, Mr. McCants was one of the founding members who 7 worked with Mayor Joseph P. Riley on the Crisis Ministry for 8 homelessness in Charleston. He also served on the 9 BerkeleyDorchester Economic Development Board and worked to 10 provide funds for weatherization assistance to lowincome families; 11 and 12 13 Whereas, currently, he is a member of the Berkeley County 14 Sheriff’s Advisory Committee and continues to serve the families 15 of Goose Creek as a volunteer; and 16 17 Whereas, John McCants finds strength for his work in the strong 18 support of his wife, Christena (Joy); their four children, Gerry, 19 Robin, Mechelle, and Artina; their grandchildren, Christopher, 20 Brandon, Joy, Javon, Christia, Matthew, and Noah; and their two 21 greatgrandchildren; Elijah and Alexander; and 22 23 Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives recognize 24 that the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of its 25 communities, and the vitality of American society as a whole 26 depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of individuals like 27 John B. McCants who use their talents and resources to serve 28 others. Now, therefore, 29 30 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 31 32 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 33 by this resolution, honor Goose Creek City Council member John 34 B. McCants on the occasion of his retirement from city council, 35 thank him for his years of outstanding public service to the people 36 of South Carolina, and wish him much success and fulfillment in 37 all his future endeavors. 38 39 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 40 John B.
