ABSTRACT: This course serves as a general introduction to physics and chemistry. Scientific method, metric conversions, laboratory safety, and measurement are stressed. First semester is based on chemical concepts such as atomic structure, element recognition, chemical formula and equation writing, acid-base chemistry and organic chemistry. Second semester is structured around physics concepts such as motion, energy, heat, mechanics, light, color and energy. Student will use problem-solving skills as related to science. The students will participate in hands on activities and laboratory settings. The skills involved in completing scientific studies will be taught. A science project or research paper is required. This is an EOCT course.

The material in this course is extensively included on the Georgia Milestone Exam. This exam will be given the week of December 4, 2017 and the week of May 7, 2018 Class Rules and Procedures CLASS RULES: All students are expected to follow the rules of the classroom. The rules are intended to make the classroom a safe place for all.

Each student is EXPECTED to: 1. Be ready to work when the bell rings. 2. Bring all materials needed to class—notebooks, pencils/pens, homework, etc. 3. Take notes and participate in class activities. 4. Groom before coming to class—this includes but is not limited to: lip chap, gloss, brushing/combing hair, lotion, nails, applying makeup, etc. 5. Remember eating and drinking is to take place in the cafeteria—this is for your safety since this is a science classroom and chemicals are used routinely. 6. Be responsible for getting the work you miss due to absences. There is a three (3) day grace period in which to makeup work after an absence. 7. RESPECT others and other’s property—the school’s, student’s, and teacher’s.—If it is not your please leave it alone 8. Come to class ready to learn. If you find yourself getting sleepy you can stand in the back of the classroom.

Corrective Actions: All corrective actions taken will be documented in Educators Handbook First Offense—Warning and parent contact Second Offense—parent contact Third Offense—Office Referral

This sequence will be followed unless the Bear Facts requires an immediate referral

MAKEUP POLICY: If a student misses a test it is the responsibility of the student to see the teacher to make up the test. Students who are absent for every test will be expected to take the test the day they return. A grade of 1 will be placed in the grade book indicating an absence for any grade missed while they were absent. A grade of 0 will be entered for any assignment which is not turned in while present.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Notebook with paper ( I think a 1 ½ in 3 ring binder works best, pen/pencil, scientific calculator (or graphing calculator).

Extra Credit: Any opportunities for extra credit will be posted on Google Classroom.

Textbook Information: You will have an electronic code for online access to the text book. The text will be used as a REFERENCE for the class.

GRADING PROCEDURES: Nine Weeks Summative Assessment=55% Formative Assessment=45%

 Semester exams will be 20% of the total grade.  There will be long-term projects throughout the year including science fair.  The following is the estimated amount of work assigned per nine weeks: o 3-5 tests o 25-30 homework/class work grades o 9-12 Lab/Hands-on Activities o 2-5 Projects  Another major area of concentration will be preparing the students for the End of Course Test.  Due to the nature of the course, there will be adjustments in the above guidelines, as needed to best serve the student needs.

Additional Information: Progress Reports in accordance with the school schedule.

Georgia Standards of Excellence: This course along with several others have recently been overhauled by the Georgia State Department of Education. The idea being to enhance student learning by having all teachers who teach the same subject collaborate on sequencing, concepts, assessment, testing, etc. This ensures the best quality education for you child.

Tutoring Opportunities: I am available for tutoring EVERY afternoon starting at 3:00. Students do NOT need to make an appointment ahead of time for tutoring. I will give them a pass to come to me. All they need to do is present the pass to anyone who may stop them while they are coming to get assistance.

Parent Note: Please make sure you REGULARLY check Parent Connect for continuous grade updates. If you are concerned about your child’s grades please call me, e-mail me, or set a conference with me. Our job together is to see to it your child has the best opportunity to learn the information. When your child struggles with any information they should see me immediately for clarification and/or re-teaching. The ONLY way I know a student is having difficulty before the test is if they let me know!!! If you know of a special need your child has (like sitting in the front due to poor vision) please let me know as soon as possible so the issue may be addressed promptly. Please feel free to contact me yourself. We are a team for your child. I look forward to working successfully with you and your child in the coming months!!
