Waste Audit Staff Assistant Fall 2012 to Spring 2013

Campus Recycling and Refuse Services (CRRS), housed under Physical Plant and Campus Services, is working toward UC Berkeley’s goal of Zero Waste by 2020. Recently, CRRS received a grant from The Green Initiative Fund to standardize and perform waste audits across campus to get a better understanding of the waste UC Berkeley is currently producing. A waste audit is a formal, structured process used to quantify the amount and types of waste being generated by an organization.

The Waste Audit Staff Assistant will: 1. Perform waste audits. In a waste audit, staff assistants and the coordinator will sort waste from a building into what material is compostable, recyclable, or must go to the landfill. Waste audit staff assistants and the coordinator will wear protective suits, gloves, and safety goggles during this process. 2. Collect waste from buildings. 3. Help set up and clean up waste audits. 4. Process waste audit results and share data with CRRS. Logistics: 1. Waste Audit Staff Assistants will work from September 2012 to May 2013 with limited work during school holidays. 2. $11/hour. 3. Expected hours: 8 hours per week. 4. One position available.

Required Qualifications: 1. Students must be self-motivated, organized, and professional. 2. Have excellent written and oral communication skills. 3. Be proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. 4. Have a flexible work schedule and, in some instances, be available to work evenings and weekends. 5. Be comfortable with performing waste audits.
