Symposia submission BACP Research Conference May 2018 Counselling changes lives: research that impacts practice

Submitting a SYMPOSIUM

Submission deadline: Friday 3 November 2017

Symposia presentation information

A symposium is a linked series of three to five papers maximum (including the overview), often with a discussant, bringing together different studies within a larger programme of research, or similar studies from different teams of researchers. The lead person organising the symposium should submit all parts of the symposia as a whole. It is the responsibility of the lead author to keep all authors of the symposia updated with the developments of the peer review process and preparation for the conference. Submissions which include an element of participatory research during the session, (e.g., using conference delegates in your session as part of your research) will not be accepted.

A symposium lasts for 90 minutes, a maximum of 4 presentations plus the overview will be allowed in a symposium. Dependent upon programme space, symposium submissions with three papers may be offered a 60 minute session on the programme. Each symposium submission must include separate abstracts for each presentation, as well as a summary abstract (overview) for the symposium as a whole. Although each symposium is regarded as a whole, each paper will be peer reviewed separately.

Please take the tips for presenters into consideration prior to preparing your submission.

How should your abstract be structured? Abstract length is limited to one A4 sheet, with a maximum word limit of 350 of the author’s own typed words and may be written in the third person or the first person, depending on the specific methodological approach taken in your research. Margins must be 2cm for both left and right and 1.7cm for top and bottom and Trebuchet MS font size 11. All abstracts must be accompanied by a completed submission form (below). In addition to your abstract, you can supply references on a separate sheet and these will be noted and kept for distribution should there be follow up requests.

Please view a copy of the 2017 abstract booklet to ensure abstract structure.

The aims of the symposium:

 What does the symposium aim to explore/answer?

Contribution of each symposium paper to the overall theme:

 How does each paper relate to the symposium theme?  What does each paper add to the symposium?

Implications of the symposium theme for counselling and psychotherapy theory, research and practice:

 What are the take-home messages from your research?  What does this mean for the counselling/psychotherapy field in terms of research, training or practice?

Name of the symposium discussant: (if you intend to have one)

Additional SYMPOSIUM papers

A separate abstract and submission form must be included for each paper in the symposium. The following is a clear overview of what each section of your abstract should contain:

Five Keywords: 5 key words which capture the topic of the research

Title of research paper

Aim/Purpose: ‘why did you do it?’

 What is already known about the topic?  What is not known about the topic?  What did the research aim to answer?

Design/Methodology: ‘how did you do it?’

 What research methodology was used?  How did you select participants? (Please include sample size and recruitment/sampling method)  How were the data collected e.g. surveys, outcome measures, interviews, focus groups etc?  How were data analysed?

Results/Findings: ‘what did you find?’

 Some demographic information about the sample e.g. gender, age, level of training etc.  Over-arching/superordinate themes from qualitative research or the main statistical findings from quantitative research  Any adverse or unexpected findings which might not support the hypothesis

Research Limitations (please include implications to practice): ‘what caution should be applied when interpreting the findings?’

 How reliable and valid are the findings?  Are the findings generalisable to a wider population?  Have the limitations of the research methodology been taken into account? e.g. role of researcher subjectivity in qualitative research or non-consideration of contextual influences in quantitative research etc.

Conclusions/Implications: ‘what does it mean?’

 The take-home message, based on the primary study finding  What does this mean for the counselling/psychotherapy field in terms of research, training or practice? 2 Symposia submission BACP Research Conference May 2018 Counselling changes lives: research that impacts practice

Which criteria will judges base their decisions on for a SYMPOSIUM submission?

The following criteria should be considered when writing your symposium abstracts; this is the criteria that peer reviewers will be using when assessing abstracts for symposia presentations.

 Overall topic is relevant to audience and to the conference theme  Aims of symposium and research questions of individual presentations are clear  Symposium and presentations form a coherent whole and are linked or show evidence of collaboration/dialogue between different research teams  Methods described are rigorous and appropriate to research question  Appropriate conclusions are drawn from each individual presentation  Implications for counselling and psychotherapy research and practice are discussed
