COURSE DESCRIPTION The Geometry course builds on Algebra I concepts and increases students’ knowledge of shapes and their properties through geometry-based applications, many of which are observable in aspects of everyday life. This knowledge helps develop visual and spatial sense and strong reasoning skills. The Geometry course requires students to make conjectures and to use reasoning to validate or negate these conjectures. The use of proofs and constructions is a valuable tool that enhances reasoning skills and enables students to better understand more complex mathematical concepts. Technology should be used to enhance students’ mathematical experience, not replace their reasoning abilities. Because of its importance, this Euclidean geometry course is required of all students receiving an Alabama High School Diploma. School systems may offer Geometry and Geometry A and Geometry B. Content standards 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 26, 30, 31, 32, 33, and 34 must be taught in the Geometry A course. Content standards 2, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, and 43 must be taught in the Geometry B course.

COURSE CONTENT Foundations for geometry Geometric reasoning Parallel and perpendicular lines Triangle congruence Properties and attributes of triangles Polygons and quadrilaterals GRADING POLICY Work is divided into two categories: Home Work 10% Daily Work 15% Major Test 75% A. Daily grades consist of quizzes. In the event a student is absent, then he/she does not make up daily grades. Unexcused absences will result in a zero on work missed that day. Students with excused absences will not be penalized. Students are expected to do their classwork and homework.

B. There will be at least five major tests given during the nine-week grading period.

C. Each student is to maintain a loose-leaf binder containing classroom assignments and homework assignments. The notebook is to be in the student’s possession during class every day. The method of grading these notebooks may vary, but it will be fair to the student, and it will be based on completion of all assignments. Notebooks will be kept in an orderly fashion according to math department guidelines. The notebook test will be counted as a major test grade. The student will not be given prior notice as to the exact day of the notebook test. He/she will not be allowed to leave the room for the purpose of getting the notebook after the notebook test is announced.

D. The daily average will be counted 25% and the test average will be counted 75% to obtain the pre- exam grade. That average will then be counted 75% and the nine weeks exam will be counted 25% to obtain the nine weeks grade.

E. Term grades will be determined by averaging the two nine weeks grades.

F. All work is to be completed by using a PENCIL. NO work written in pen will be accepted and will result in a zero.

THERE WILL BE NO DROP GRADES.

THERE WILL BE NO EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS GIVEN TO INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS.

CLASS RULES Bring needed materials to class. Be in your seat and ready to begin when the bell rings. Respect and be polite to all people. Speak at appropriate times, using appropriate voice and language. Respect other people’s property. Follow all school rules.
