The original name of the church 25 was Old Zion Reformed Union Methodist Church. Then, as the 26 1920s yielded the Great Depression, farm laborers and their 27 families were forced to migrate to other states in search of work; 28 and 29 30 Whereas, on December 13, 1944, the members of Zion Hill 31 Reformed Union Methodist Episcopal Church voted and 32 unanimously agreed to become members of the African Methodist 33 Episcopal Church, founded by Richard Allen in 1793; and 34 35 Whereas, since the conversion to the African Methodist Episcopal 36 Church Conference, Zion Hill has weathered the storms of time 37 and flourished with a large membership on roll; and 38 39 Whereas, on January 27, 1945, the official transfer of the property, 40 which also included the church, was completed; and 41

[4102] 2 1 Whereas, the first officials of the new Zion Hill African Methodist 2 Episcopal Church were the late Reverend Parker, who served as 3 presiding elder, and the late Reverend J.W. Seal, who served as 4 pastor. The first trustees were the late Mr. Sanders Pleasant, the 5 late Mr. Herbert Lee, and the late Mr. Henry Canty; and 6 7 Whereas, some members who have moved away still support the 8 church with their tithes and offerings. These friends also support 9 the church when it sponsors annual events, and they visit as often 10 as possible; and 11 12 Whereas, Zion Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church was also 13 a part of the 1991 drama Separate but Equal, a film that featured 14 actor Sidney Poitier, who portrayed the NAACP lawyer Thurgood 15 Marshall; and 16 17 Whereas, throughout the years, God has blessed Zion Hill with 18 enough members to stay strong and keep the Holy Ghost fires 19 burning at the church so the community will have a sanctuary to 20 carry on God’s work; and 21 22 Whereas, Zion Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church is 23 currently blessed with the highly efficient leadership of the Right 24 Reverend Samuel Lawrence Green, Sr., as presiding bishop of the 25 Seventh Episcopal District, the Reverend Dr. Phillip C. Anderson 26 as presiding elder of the Wateree District of the Central 27 Conference, the Reverend Malcolm Orson Simpson, M.Div., as 28 pastor, and Sister Deirdra H. Pleasant as licentiate; and 29 30 Whereas, to mark its milestone one hundredth anniversary, the 31 church set apart a special celebratory time on Sunday, September 32 18, 2016, with the theme “Still Yet Holding On to God’s Big 33 Hands”; and 34 35 Whereas, Zion Hill AME Church has been a beacon of light and a 36 community worship center in the Pinewood area for one hundred 37 years, and, God willing, will continue its godly heritage for many 38 more years of worship and service. Now, therefore, 39 40 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 41 42 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 43 by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Zion Hill African
