NEXT MEETING Monday, October 9, NW GA Bikeway & Pedestrian Routes, Terry Reynolds, AICP Ragan • Smith Associates, Inc.

Everyone is familiar with the Riverwalk, which extends from Chickamauga Dam south along the south edge of the Tennessee River well southwest of Downtown. A final link will connect it with the St. Elmo Greenway which extends almost to the TN-GA state line. Similarly, efforts are underway to complete all portions of the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway from the Riverwalk southeast to Camp Jordan Park. These shared-use trails will facilitate bicycle and pedestrian travel in a wide arc, both of whose ends lie near the TN-GA state line. The program next week will present a feasibility study which was prepared to explore inter-connecting both ends of that arc across the southern part of the greater Chattanooga area as well as other proposed shared-use trails in Dade County, Walker County and Catoosa County and inter- connections between five study area municipalities.

Note: PDH certificates will be available for attendance at this meeting.

MEETING LOGISTICS: The meeting will be held at the Chattanoogan Hotel located at 1201 Broad Street Chattanooga, TN 37402 in The Foundry. Parking is valet only, and the valet slip can be validated by the Broad Street Grille for free parking. Tips are not included for valet parking. The vehicle entrance for the hotel is from 13th Street. The valet drop-off is at the covered hotel entrance. Street metered parking is also available around the hotel. The meeting is from 12 noon to 1 pm EST. All attendees are welcome to join us for lunch before the meeting. The cost for those having lunch is $16 for the full buffet. PREVIOUS MEETING Monday, October 2: STEP-UP Chattanooga, Stacy Lightfoot and Jeff Rector, STEP UP Chattanooga

STEP-UP Chattanooga is a summer intern program for high school student that pairs them with local businesses that match the students’ interests. To participate in a STEM-UP internship, a student (Jr/Sr in HS) must apply and be recommended by their guidance counselor. All applicants receive job-preparation training and then must interview with sponsoring companies to compete for jobs. Companies are asked to provide a supervisor/mentor who also receives some training, pay minimum wage or better, and provide meaningful work for 6-8 weeks of the summer at least 20 hours per week.

Reviews of the program are overwhelmingly popular. The new assessment service indicates that while only 20% of students recognize some interest in Engineering, about 80% actually have aptitude for it and just don't understand what the work is like or are intimidated by the prerequisites such as math. Having an actual work experience helps students refine their understanding of what they like and do not, and predict where they will find success.

Note: PDH certificates were available for attendance at this meeting. If someone would like an electronic copy of PDH certificates for this or previous meetings, please contact Fred Sumrall at [email protected].
