Keene State College Content Templates

General Content Template

This content template will help you get started writing and editing content for the Keene State College website. Content templates also help the web team understand where content should appear and how it should be formatted. Pages and Fields A content template usually corresponds to a “vertical” section of the website, with multiple pages and page levels contained in a single document. Having a single document makes it easier to follow the path of information from the upper level pages to the sub-level pages. The content template comprises a number of pages. You can add pages as needed. Each page comprises a number of fields: Introduction, Topics, Groups, and Shared Content. These fields are tables that can that can be added, modified, or deleted as needed. Each page should start with an introduction and end with contact information or other call to action. In between, you can add topics and groups as needed. Shared Content is content that is created in a separate template and used by multiple pages on the website. Examples include contact information; news; events; forms; and documents. You do not use a page content template to edit or create shared content. Before you start, review the Template Field Descriptions (page 3) to see how the content templates align with the website pages. The fields are color-coded for easy reference. Character Counts Character counts are provided in the left-hand column of the input fields. They are provided as guidelines for maintaining consistency across the website. The exception is the Metadata field, which has strict maximum counts. Character counts include spaces. Tone The page introduction and headline can be message-driven, promotional, and aspirational. After that, readers are usually looking for information or trying to or complete a task. Be brief, precise, and matter-of- fact. Avoid flowery descriptions and wordy, roundabout sentences. Readers tend to scan headlines and subheadlines. Use terms that are easy to recognize, especially in subheadings. For example: “Financial Aid” instead of “Making college more affordable.” Use nouns and verbs; avoid adjectives and adverbs. (Search engines love nouns, too.) Formatting Text Feel free to bold or italicize text. Indicate if text is bulleted or indented. Fonts and text color are determined by the page designs. Do not underline text except to indicate a hyperlink. Adding Hyperlinks Until the website has been configured, it will be difficult to link to other pages. Underline the link and add a comment in the margin with the current URL or a description of the page you want to link to. Do not put links in parentheses within the text. Graphics Depending on the page design, fields may include spaces for adding an image or photograph with a headline, caption, and link. Summary and Detail Pages have fewer spaces for graphics.
