Welcome Back! I'm Excited About All of the New Faces I'll Be Teaching This Year. We Will

Week of August 15 - 19, 2016

Welcome Back! I'm excited about all of the new faces I'll be teaching this year. We will have a fun, productive year full of reading, English, writing and spelling. I'm hoping to develop a love for reading in your child, if it's not there yet; and if it is there, to foster that love. If there are any problems, concerns, questions during the year, please call the office to schedule a conference or email me at [email protected]. This site will be updated weekly. You can also join remind 101. The remind 101 will be texted out when there is a change of schedule or an important event coming up. I will not send out daily homework reminders. Homework for each class will be written on the board. All students need to write this down each day. Reading - Summer Reading was due last week by Friday, August 12th. IF your child hasn't turned in summer reading, please do so by Monday. Beginning Monday, August 15th, the grade will drop 10 points per day. This is a G2 grade. This week, we are reading "Blasting Off to Space Academy". Our vocabulary words are: function, operator, tethered, version, axis, simulate, acute, flawed, delicate, and adjusted. The focus skill for this week is - nonfiction text features. We will work on identifying text features in our reading. On Friday, we will have a G2 test on this story. On Tuesday, I will give the students their first vocabulary workshop story with the vocabulary from the story. We will practice the words, definitions, synonyms and antonyms daily. We will have a G1 check-up on Thursday on the synonyms and antonyms. On Tuesday, August nth, we will have a G1 (fill in the blank) with vocabulary words in context and on Friday, August 19th, we will have a G2 test on these vocabulary words. All children have completed his/her STAR reading test. I will send home information on Tuesday regarding your child's AR goal. Please remember to read, read, read! Every child should have two books with him at all times. Books can be borrowed and taken home from my library, just remember to return them. We will take the STAR test this week and AR goals will be assigned. AR goes in the grade book as two G2 grades - one for comprehension and one for goal. The deadline for AR this nine weeks is Wednesday, October 5th. English - We will continue with chapter 1 this week. We will have a G2 test on Tuesday, August 16th. On Wednesday, we will begin chapter 2 and begin reviewing nouns and verbs including simple subjects and simple predicates. We will also begin our first writing piece. We will write informatively all about ourselves. We will create a collage and write an informative piece about the collage. This work will be done in class. Your child can start collecting pictures at home of things that REPRESENT your child. Not actual pictures of your child, but words or pictures that represent him/her and his/her personality. Spelling - Our words this week are: awake, feast, stray, greet, praise, disease, repeat, display, braces, thief, ashamed, sleeve, waist, beneath, sheepish, release, remain, sway, training, niece, terrain, succeed, betray, motivate, and upheaval.
