Skin

The Skin is the largest organ of the body.

It has many functions with the main one being that it provides a protective outer covering to the underlying structure and prevents bacteria entering the body

The skin has three main layers

1. The epidermis - the surface of the skin

2. The dermis - the dermis supports the epidermis and provides elasticity and contour

3. The hypodermis - also known as the “subcutaneous layer” which is made up of adipose tissue containing fat cells, veins and muscles.

Structure of the Hair

• The Follicle is an indentation of the epidermis into the dermis

• The base of the Follicle is shaped like a bulb and it contains the loose connective tissue of the dermal papilla which contains;

Blood vessels Nerve Endings Melanocytes The Follicles

The Follicle consists of,

1. The inner root sheath 2. The outer root sheath 3. A connective tissue sheath

- 10 – www.teatreeoilproducts.co.uk Waxing Training Manual The Inner Root Sheath

The inner root sheath has three layers of cells called the

1. Henles layer (1 cell thick) 2. Huxleys layer (2 or more cells thick) 3. Cuticle Layer

The Outer Root Sheath

New follicles are formed from the outer root sheath as it is a source of new “Hair germ cells”

Connective Tissue

Provides nerve endings and blood supply

The Hair

The Hair consists of 2 main parts; The Root The Shaft

The Root

• The root contains a bulb which can be found below the surface of the skin at the base of the follicles. • At its base the hair root expands into a bulbous shape called the dermal papilla. The papilla is a vital source of nourishment for the entire follicle structure and it derives its blood supply from the capillary loop adjacent, and this determines the growth and overall health of the hair. • The lower part of the bulb is called the matrix. In the matrix the cells are mitotically active and undifferentiated. There is a “Critical level” at which the cell differentiate. This is a process where they undergo change in growth and development, to become the inner root sheath of the hair.

The Shaft

The shaft extends above the skin surface and is made of dead keratinized cells and is made up of 3 parts -

- 11 – www.teatreeoilproducts.co.uk Waxing Training Manual

1. The cuticle 2. The cortex 3. The Medulla

The Cuticle • Outer layer of the shaft • Cells lie tightly over each other • Cells are translucent and contain no pigmentation

The Cortex • Largest portion of the hair • Consists of elongated keratinized cells • Air space between the cells in the cortex

The Medulla • Centre of the hair • Maybe absent in fine hair • Cells are large, loosely connected and keratinized • Large air space in and between cells

Hair growth has 3 stages

Anagen

The growing stage; an active stage when the follicle is fully formed. Ideally, for waxing to be most successful, hair will be removed at this stage.

Catagen

The transitory stage between anagen and telogen, this stage of the cycle is very short and sometimes a new hair will emerge before the club hair is shed.

Telogen

The resting stage, where the follicle shrinks and the detached hair will eventually work its way out naturally.

There are two distinct areas of hair growth:

The Head and the Body

- 12 – www.teatreeoilproducts.co.uk Waxing Training Manual

The nature of the hair growth on the body is "programmed" not to have long hair, where the hair follicles on the head are programmed to having a growing phase (Anagen) This normally lasts up to 5 to 6 years, so with 1cm growth per month you will be able to have long hair.

Whereas on the body, the "growth phase" under normal conditions is set at a much shorter phase by the body. Otherwise we would end up with long hair on the body as well!

The Transitional phase (Catagen) where the hair stops growing and is eventually shed from the hair follicle to allow room for the new hair to come out. The resting phase (telogen) normally lasts between to 4 to 6 week, and it is estimated that approx. 15% of all hair is in this phase at any one time.
