India: Exploring an Emerging Market
During the week of April 5th, 2010, the University of Iowa Center for International Finance & Development (UICIFD), along with other sponsors, will present the following events focusing on India, a dynamic emerging economy.
Documentary “Together We Can” with Commentary by Professor Meena Khandelwal, April 5 th , 4-5pm in Room 125 of the Boyd Law Building
“Together We Can” is the story of how women from the small village of Anantpura in Rajasthan started an all women cooperative milk dairy, thereby attaining both economic independence and emotional support. After the viewing, Meena Khandelwal, an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies at the University of Iowa, will talk briefly about the history and success of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in bringing Indian women together and increasing their status in the community and in the home.
This event is co-sponsored by the South Asian Studies Program at the University of Iowa, the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, and International Programs at the University of Iowa. Refreshments will be provided.
“ Investing in India: Opportunities and Challenges for Foreign Investors,” Sarvjeev Sidhu, April 7 th , 4-5pm in Room 245 of the Boyd Law Building
Sarvjeev Sidhu, CFA, is the Global Head of Emerging Markets for AEGON Asset Management. In this capacity, he manages over $3 billion in emerging market debt. Mr. Sidhu has over 16 years of experience investing in emerging markets, including India. His talk will address India’s current economic position from the perspective of an institutional investor.

Poster Presentation “India: Exploring an Emerging Market,” April 8 th , 10-Noon in the Boyd Law Building Lobby
During the 2009-2010 academic year, the UICIFD’s research has focused on India and its current economic position as an emerging market. The Center’s staff members have produced posters summarizing their research in six different topics: the banking sector, the securities market, the evolution of foreign investment, legal reform and good governance, India’s role in the global economic order, and India’s experience with the global financial crisis. Staffers will be on hand to explain their research. After the event, the posters will be posted on the UICIFD website.
