University College Division Curriculum Committee Minutes September 7, 2012 Building 7-601

I. Call to Order

A. Kara called the meeting to order at 9:00AM.

B. Members Present: Alapaki Luke, John Delay, Karadeen Kam-Kalani, Sterling Foster Femar Lee, Marcia Roberts-Deutsch, Paul Sharard, Jeff Sterns, Maggie Templeton (for Scot Perry).

II. Elect new Chair

Kara nominated John Delay to be DCC chair for this academic year. Maggie seconded the nomination. By consensus, John Delay is the new chair.

III. Curriculum Actions Taken

1) ENG 51 (Deactivate): Course is no longer being taught. It was also taken out of the catalog. It was suggested that the course be deleted instead of deactivated. Jeff will resubmit using the deletion form.

2) ENG 102 (Deactivate): Course is no longer being taught. Jeff will resubmit using the deletion form.

3) FR 101/102 (Deactivate): There is no demand or instructor at the moment. Jeff moved to deactivate course, Maggie seconded. Motion approved unanimously.

4) ESL 7 (Delete)(Modify SLOs???): The form to modify the SLOs of the course was removed from the agenda. Deleting the course is the only curriculum action to be considered. Jeff moved to delete course, Maggie seconded. Motion approved unanimously.

5) ESL 17 (Delete): Course no longer meets the criteria of the program. Jeff moved to delete course, Sterling seconded. Motion approved unanimously. Jeff requested that the curriculum proposals below (6-11) be removed from the agenda. The SLOs for the courses are currently being modified to ensure that they are assessable. Jeff would like to double check that the changes that need to be made are reflected in the proposals that were submitted. Jeff will resubmit them at the next meeting if no changes are made.

12) PSY 250 (Activate): The course was inadvertently deactivated. Sterling moved to activate the course, Kara seconded. Motion passed unanimously.

13) PHIL 204 (Modify Prerequisite): The proposal is to remove Phil 100 and 101 as its prerequisite. It was suggested that the course should have an English prerequisite, preferably English 100. Another suggestion was to have completion of Eng 22/60 or placement in Eng 100 as its prerequisite. Paul questioned why this course is a 200 level course. Kara will take back the committee’s recommendation to Chris.

14) POLS/ASAN 250 (Modify Course Title): The proposal is to change the title to Asian Politics Since The 19th Hundreds. Femar moved to approve title change, John seconded. Motion approved unanimously.

15) THEATER 201 (activate): Last spring, Theater 101 was reactivated so that it could be taught at Hickam. Marcia would like to reactivate Theater 201, which will be taught in the Fall. Maggie moved to reactivate the course, Alapaki seconded. Motion passed unanimously.

VI. OTHER BUSINESS

Review of the UC-DCC charter. The committee members were asked to review the charter in order to understand the process and protocol.
