Are You Up To The Challenge?? October welcomes another new challenge or two for the guild. We are looking forward to a great show from our challenge folks. Sue DeSantis has organized a “Glorious” opportunity for Guild members to display their creativity and members and guests will get to select our favorites from among the entries. For extra entertainment, I thought while we await the vote count, we could have our own show and tell of our most “challenging” quilts. So bring along your most challenging quilts and tell us how you made it work. On the other hand, if you have a quilt that has been challenging you, bring it too and get some suggestions from folk who may have had to deal with that same issue in the past. I will be collecting money and sign ups for the Teri Tope class in November. We will also have another “lottery” for a class space. Chances are $1 each. The class is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. The class will be on November 12 at Kathy Bean’s home in Centerville. Youth expedition sign up will continue through October. This is a planning committee at the moment. We will also be trying to think of a name for this group. As we are charting a new path in the guild I refer to it as an expedition for the moment. Please send me an e-mail if you don’t make it to the meeting and want to get involved in taking quilting to the younger generations. I have already received some great suggestions/ideas and am looking forward to working with everyone. We will be voting in October so all members are encouraged to attend. Move projects and videos are available on-line at: www.missouriquiltco.com Scrappy Pinwheels (38 1/2 x 38 1/2) (Demonstrated by Debbie Arrington) 1) Two Charm Packs one of which is Solids a.) Choose 1 charm square and 1 solid charm square b.) With RST, stitch 1/4” seam all the way around c.) Cut on the diagonal both ways; Press toward dark d.) Piece together into a pinwheel Sample used: 1 Moda charm pack 1 Moda Solid Charm Pack Setting: 6x6 Added 3 1/2” borders Jelly Roll/Charm Squares (74 1/2 x 74 1/2) (Demonstrated by Helen Cook) 1) Jelly Roll and Charm Pack of the same fabric line a.) Choose one coordinating charm square & jelly roll strip b.) Subcut jelly roll strip into 2- 5” x 2 1/2” strips and 2 - 9” x 2 1/2” strips *save leftover c.) Sew the 2-5” strips onto both sides of the charm square; Press away from charm square d.) Sew the 2- 9” strips to the top and bottom of the charm square; Press away from the charm square Do this for all 40 charm squares and jelly roll strips. You will have 40 blocks to put in a 6x6 square setting with four leftover blocks e.) Using the leftover sections of your jelly roll strips; Piece together (long sides) using 6 or 8 to make a strip set. Press seams all one direction. Make 4 strip sets. f.) Subcut strip sets into 3” wide strips and sew end to end. Frame quilt with 1 1/2” wide inner border. Add strip set border. Frame again with same 1 1/2” wide inner border. Add 6” wide outer border. Tumbler Quilt (41 x 51) (Demonstrated by Jean Brittingham) 1) Acrylic 5” tumbler template 2) Two same Charm Packs a.) Stack 4 or 5 charm squares together and trim both sides using acrylic 5” tumbler template b.) Stagger tumbler blocks in 9 x 9 setting and sew rows together. c.) Use long ruler & trim sides even d.) Add 5 1/2” outer border Scrappy 4-Patch (34 x 38) (Demonstrated by Maria Elkins) 1) One Charm Pack a.) Choose two contrasting charm squares and sew 1/4” seam down both sides (chain piece several together) b.) Cut n half (2 1/2”) down the middle; Open and press toward the dark c.) Piece these together (short side to short side) into long strip. Press seams all one way d.) Fold the first section over next (RST) and cut at 2 1/2” (one 2 1/2” section leftover to go with end one); Continue folding & cutting for scrappy 4-patch block e.) Piece together in rows; add 5 1/2” outer border Attend Tea & Talk October 14 Mark your calendar for the next Tea & Talk set for 6 p.m. on Friday, October 14, at the home of Shari Brindley, 721 North King Street, Xenia. Tea and Talk was initiated by Shari as an opportunity for newer members to get together with more “seasoned” members to ask questions and share information and ideas about the Guild or even general quilting questions. Tea & Talk is an occasional activity, held as members volunteer to host the event. Members are invited to chat, laugh and get to know others in the Guild on a more personal basis than is possible at monthly meetings. It’s a great time to ask questions about the Guild, about equipment, supplies, shopping destinations, etc., and quilters are always willing to share a good time or two. If you plan on attending the October Tea and Talk, please call Shari at 479-8343 for directions and so she can plan for the appropriate number of guests. Third Monday Stitch-In The third Monday evening stitch-in for October will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 17, at the home of Jan Delahanty. Her address is 9507 Wellbaum Road, Brookville. Call her at 884- 7466 for directions and to let her know that you will be attending. Sew-in at Senior Center All are welcome to attend a monthly sew-in for the guild at the Fairborn Senior Center. The sew-in is the 4th Monday of every month. Our next sew-in will be Monday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $2.00 for guild members ($1.00 for members of the Fairborn Senior center). Come and get to know other members of the guild. Come for a few hours or stay all day. (When you arrive, go to the back-door of the center and the room is to the left.) Bring a project and sew, sew and sew. Now that the Christmas gifts are finished, you can sew something for yourself. Bring your sewing machine and supplies, or do some hand work. A Garden Tea Party That’s the theme of next year’s retreat, February 18, 19 & 20, 2012 (Saturday, Sunday & Monday) Get your lovely Garden Tea Party hats ready (you just may win a prize) and come and enjoy three days of fun & uninterrupted quilting. Pack up those UFO’s, WIP’s & PIG’s and feel the sense of accomplishment as you make progress on them. Bring a Jelly Roll along if you’d like to participate in the Great Jelly Roll Quilt Race. Quilt Shows of Interest Through October 2 Kaleidoscope Quilts: The Art of Paula Nadelstern Akron, Ohio The Akron Art Museum, One South High Street, Akron, will feature an exhibition which features 19 contemporary quilts, 12 kaleidoscope quilt block by Paula Nadelstern, an early 19th Century star pattern quilt, contemporary kaleidoscopes, and two rare early kaleidoscopes. October 1-2 The ABCs of Quilting Mount Gilead, Ohio The Morrow County Quilting Guild will present its annual show at Park Avenue Elementary School, 335 Park Avenue, Mount Gilead, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday October 2. A free-will donation will be accepted at the door. The guild will offer chances on a raffle quilty and there will be a sale table and silent auction of quilt items. October 7-8 Biennial Quilt Show Granville, Ohio The Heart of Ohio Quilt Guild will present its biennial show at the Bryn Du Mansion Field House, 537 Jones Road, Granville, Ohio, on the campus of Dennison University. The non-juried show includes approximately 150 works by group members as well as a display by featured artist Barb Whyte. An informal Quilt Turning will feature past guild presidents’ quilts. There are vendors, door prizes, a silent auction, children’s activities and a cafe. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5.00 ($4.00 for Seniors). There will be vendors, refreshments and the guild’s “Gifts Sew Special” shop. Admission is $3.00
