POSITION: LIBRARY SECURITY OFFICER

AGENCY: MAIN LIBRARY

SALARY: $26,500 - $31,733

The Security Department services the library system twenty-four (24) hours a day and is responsible for maintaining security and enforcing library policies at Main Library. The Security Department is located in Main Library at 5201 Woodward Avenue.

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under close supervision, maintains security and safety of customers, staff and property in library by patrolling assigned areas; responsible for detecting and preventing thefts or vandalism and for removing and detaining suspicious or disorderly individuals.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED: Works under the close supervision of the Library – Manager, Security; and does not exercise supervisory responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is first in a series of four levels in the Security Support series. It is distinguished from the Library – Supervisor, Security in that incumbents do not have formalized lead responsibilities. Security Officers are expected to report unusual or suspicious activity to their supervisor and/or law enforcement and are required to maintain flexible work schedules in order to accommodate library hours and patrols.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

 Monitors and admits only authorized staff into the staff entrances to the library; patrols outside grounds and parking lots; checks and secures all windows for breakage for ground level; reads and reviews daily log, reports and e-mails.  Opens building; turns on light switches; turns on escalators; notifies supervisor of any overnight break-ins or other security/safety issues; answers telephones and relays messages as appropriate; patrols assigned buildings and grounds; monitors and sits at post at assigned entrance doors; responds to radio calls; and checks all fire exits and fire extinguishers.  Monitors cameras in Security Control Center; monitors staff parking gate, sign in/out contractors; checks area for unauthorized persons in B-level basement checking fire hose closet; and patrols all areas of building and handles routine customer complaints.  Opens doors for contractors and roof doors as approved and necessary; inspects bags, briefcases, and other materials as customers enter the building; assists and directs customers with their questions and directions.  Takes staff identification photos; reports suspicious individuals to dispatch; watches for disorderly persons and enforces policy when needed; checks all and tests emergency lighting; and checks building and grounds during heavy rains.  Ensures staff and customers have all vacated the building at the end of the day and the building is empty prior to locking it for the evening; monitors all trash leaving the building when outer dock doors are open; monitors the staff parking lot as assigned while the gate is left open for the public after 5 p.m. for free parking.  Provides support to the Manager, Security on matters as directed; participates on a variety of committees as assigned; prepares and presents reports and other necessary correspondence as assigned; attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and developments in the fields related to area of assignment; ensures processes, policies and practices are interpreted and applied consistently and effectively; ensures accountability and compliance with all current and applicable state and federal laws, Library policies and procedures, rules and regulations.  Ensures an environment of customer-responsive services, providing customer-responsive service and handling customer service issues.  Performs other duties as assigned or required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: High School Diploma/GED and one year of basic security experience that includes heavy public contact, preferably working in large buildings; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:  Must possess a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.  A valid First Aid & CPR certification is required at hire or within sixty days of employment.

Required Knowledge of:  Accepted practices relating to security operations.  Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.  Basic methods and techniques of security monitoring and emergency preparedness.  Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and computer applications such as word processing and databases.  Basic First Aid, CPR and other related emergency services.  Public library operations, services, and policies.  Customer service standards and procedures.

Required Skill in:  Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.  Applying basic principles and practices of security management.  Understanding industry concepts of security management.  Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with and serve a staff and community with diverse cultural, educational and experiential backgrounds.  Utilizing personal computer software programs affecting assigned work and in compiling and preparing clear, detailed and accurate written logs and reports.  Meeting deadlines and adapting to unexpected changes in workflow and assignments.  Working with internal and external customers in a professional, friendly and cooperative manner.  Responding appropriately to emergency situations and critical incidents.  Administering basic first aid, CPR, and other related emergency services.  Responding to inquiries in effective oral and written communications. Required Skill in (Continued):  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Library and department staff, board members, outside agencies, and the general public.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:  Work is performed in a standard library environment.  Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
