Research Question: When force is applied, do solid and liquid materials have an effect on minerals?

Hypothesis (prediction): I think / don’t think that ……. because…….

______

______

Materials: Variables: 1 plastic jar with lid Independent (manipulated) variable 4 chalk pieces (represents the mineral) ______8 rocks 1 stopwatch Dependent (responding) variable(s) 150 ml of water ______

Procedure:

1. Place the chalk pieces and the rocks inside the plastic jar and put the lid on the jar.

2. Shake the jar for 1 minute.

3. Record your observations on the Results Table.

4. Shake the jar for 2 minutes more.

5. Record your observations on the Results Table (3 minutes).

6. Shake the jar for 2 minutes more.

7. Record your observations on the Results Table (5 minutes).

8. Empty the jar. Fill it with 150 ml of water.

9. Repeat steps 2-6. Results:

1. How did the mineral change after being shaken with rocks for 1 minute? for 3 more minutes? What caused the mineral to change? ______

______

2. Compared to shaking the chalk with only rocks, what effect did shaking chalk with both rocks and water have on the chalk? What caused the effect? ______

______

3. Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect? Support your answer with data collected. ______
