COURSE DESCRIPTION: A general over-view of methods and concepts for the teaching of singing with emphasis on the psychological, physiological, and acoustical principles that are involved in the production of qualitative vocal sound. OBJECTIVES: To examine the art of singing, to identify and understand healthy vocalism, and to develop the ability to communicate the techniques of singing to others. REQUIRED TEXT: McKinney, James C., The Diagnosis and Correction of Vocal Faults, Genevox Music Group, 1994. ADDITIONAL VIDEO TEXT: Wall, Joan and Caldwell, Robert, The Singer’s Voice Video Text Library, PST Publications, 1991-1995. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Familiarity with information from the text, the PST Videos, and classroom discussions. Substantial memorization will be required. EVALUATIION AND GRADING: Grading will be based on attendance, class participation, exam scores, and submission of reflections. Class participation and attendance =40% Exams 1-4 = 40% Final Exam = 20% Reflections = Credit/Non-Credit (if Required)– Must be submitted to receive a final grade ATTENDANCE POLICY: After one absence, any absence will lower your final grade by 10 percentage points (10%). This means that your final grade will be lowered by one full letter for any absence beyond one. TARDINESS POLICY: Three unexcused late arrivals count as one unexcused absence. LEAVING THE ROOM DURING CLASS WILL BE COUNTED AS A PARTIAL ABSENCE. SCHEDULE

WEEK FOUR: Chapters 8 & 9 (One class on Wed.)

WEEK FIVE: Chapters 10 & 11

WEEK SIX: Review Final

The tests will include material covered up to the day of the test, not the assignment of that day.
