YAPPERS GRANT AWARD SUPPORTS HILLS & DALES 2012 DANCE PROGRAM

(Dubuque, IA – August 27, 2012) Hills & Dales was recently presented a check in the amount of $500.00 from the YAPPERS (youth area philanthropists) to support the Hills & Dales 2012 Dance program. YAPPERS support of this project will provide an opportunity for a group of children supported by Hills & Dales to learn a choreographed group dance routine that will be performed in front of an audience full of proud parents and other loved ones, friends, staff, and interested members of the public. The need for this performance/project is due to the fact that many times persons with disabilities ‘sit in the background’ to view performances and are unable to participate in activities that may require physical movement. The participants will benefit from the increased physical movement and activity, sensory stimulation (lights, sounds, etc.), involvement with a “team”, increased independence, and an overall enhanced self-esteem through self-expression. Often times, persons with disabilities are non-verbal, and this project/performance will allow them to communicate and express themselves more freely. The featured artists/ensemble will be a group of approximately 12 children and young adults with disabilities who are supported through various Hills & Dales programs, and will be open to anyone who expresses interest in performing and learning more about dance. These persons may or may not use a wheelchair, and may require staff assistance to complete portions of the choreographed moves. A local dance instructor, Miss Dee from Dubuque Dance Studio and Gymnastics Club, will once again donate her services and time to be the lead instructor and choreographer of the performance. Miss Dee has worked with Hills & Dales clients in the past, and realizes that dance is beneficial for people of all abilities. Many other children and persons supported by Hills & Dales will attend the final performance, which may also increase their desire to get involved in future dance programs and opportunities. Hills & Dales is appreciative of the support YAPPERS provided to assist in the mission to build meaningful lives for individuals with disabilities by offering services that support the whole person and enhance community inclusion. Hills & Dales, a not-for-profit organization, has been providing supports and services to individuals with disabilities in Dubuque and Northeast Iowa since 1973.
