CAPCSD Board and AAA Board Meeting Minutes Wednesday April 15, 2015 Newport Beach, CA

CAPCSD Board Members in Attendance: Carol Dudding, Mary Hardin-Jones, Melody Harrison, Gregg Lof, Cheryl Messick, Peggy Nelson, Colleen O’Rourke, Lisa Scott, Judith Vander Woude.

AAA Representatives in Attendance: Erin Miller (AAA President), Lisa Hunter (ACAE Chair), Doris Gordon (ACAE Executive Director).

1. Welcome. Vander Woude welcomed the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) representatives and introductions were made.

2. ACAE Update. Gordon reported that one new program has received ACAE accreditation (UT Dallas) and one program is in development (University of the Pacific). She noted that five additional programs are in the ACAE pipeline and that she recently visited a university in South Korea that may be in developing status this year.

3. The Transforming of Higher Education - Will Audiology Be a Part of This? Miller introduced this topic and expressed concern about clinical education being based on the number of clinical hours rather than competencies. Hunter also questioned whether a 4-year program is needed or if the degree could be accomplished in 3 years. She noted that the undergraduate degree programs in our field may need revisions to include more preparation in the sciences and math. She questioned if there could be an undergraduate major or minor in audiology and asked how we might recruit more undergraduate students. Several examples of universities with minors in speech and hearing sciences were given as well as examples of targeted recruitment.

AAA has been working with the National Association of Academic Advisors to share information about the career of audiology; however, there is a need for outreach to high school and middle school students. The Academy would like to work with CAPCSD on recruitment strategies. Vander Woude responded that this would be an opportunity for collaboration between the organizations.

Hunter also noted a concern about undergraduates who do not get into graduate school and suggested that undergraduate programs might offer audiology clinical experience to allow students to get jobs as audiology assistants upon graduation. AAA, ABA, and ASHA have developed an ad hoc committee to examine the current AuD model. Miller will contact Vander Woude to see if a CAPCSD representative might also serve on that ad hoc committee. Hunter mentioned that the Council of AuD Programs would like to have more sessions at the AAA Convention on educational and academic issues. Dudding shared her work with simulations and her survey on attitudes and the use of simulations. This may be another area for collaboration among AAA, CFCC, and CAPCSD.

4. The Preceptor Certificate. Miller reported that the ABA is working on the training of preceptors and the development of a certificate to improve the supervisory expertise of preceptors. Currently they are gathering subject matter experts to develop the content of the training. Dudding explained CAPCSD’s initiative for clinical educator training and its progress. She noted that the CAPCSD web- based training program will focus on those individuals who supervise students enrolled in graduate programs and will be available at no cost to CAPCSD member programs. She also discussed the work of the ASHA ad hoc committee on supervision.

Vander Woude adjourned the meeting at 10:57 a.m.
