August 2013 Dear Parents: Your child has been invited to participate in the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program in our classroom. This program allows your child to bring his/her personal technology from home and use it in the classroom. Below you will find our classroom expectations and procedures for use.

Acceptable Use

 Reading books (downloaded or on apps already on the device)  Math facts (acceptable apps that are parent and teacher approved)  Internet research (under supervision of teacher)  Educational apps (appropriate for 5th grade content and already on the device)

Times Allowed

 Before school – READING ONLY  During class – WHEN TEACHER ALLOWS IT  D.E.A.R. time

Classroom Expectations

 Access is a privilege, not a right, and carries with it responsibilities for all users. Misuse will not be tolerated. Misuse means any violation of the acceptable use agreement as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct under the acceptable use policy. This policy can be located on the KISD website under the “Student and Parent” tab or at the following URL: https://www.killeenisd.org/departmentDocs/c952/documents/StudentCoCEngli sh.pdf  Please know that Cedar Valley and KISD will not be responsible for loss, theft, or damage of the devices brought from home, and we will follow the Student Code of Conduct for any misuse of the equipment. With teacher approval, students will be able to use their devices in the classroom and access the Internet using the KISD secure network.  Please have the device charged prior to coming to school. We do not have the facilities to accommodate charging numerous devices.  If there is a substitute in the classroom, there will be no devices allowed for that day.  The devices will be prohibited during testing situations due to security reasons.  All devices will need to be turned off when not in use.  Your child’s device is his/her responsibility. Sharing of these items will not be tolerated.  Classrooms will be locked when unoccupied for the security of the devices.  Devices will be kept in a designated area on the student’s desk.  Music and non-educational games are prohibited.  The devices are allowed in the classroom for educational use, not entertainment.  Devices will be used only in the classroom or hallway (before school). They are not to be taken to the cafeteria, playground or other areas unless permitted by the teacher.  Additional rules may be added as situations arise to promote success.

Discipline will be handled as the following:

. 1st time –warning . 2nd time – loss of privilege for the day and parent notification . 3rd time – permanent loss of privilege coupled with an office referral
