Math 116 STATISTICS HOW to STUDY in Order to Succeed in the Class

Math 116 – STATISTICS – HOW TO STUDY in order to succeed in the class This class requires the use of STATS PORTAL an online homework component (10% of your grade)

This is a course in which you will be required to use your common sense and to THINK! Understanding of concepts and interpretations of results are an essential part of this course.

 This class requires a lot of reading; without reading, it will be impossible to answer the problems assigned as homework or given in quizzes and exams.  Exams will contain: o Multiple choice questions that assess understanding of the concepts o Open ended questions in which you will show calculations and interpret results  An alternative to reading: Use the STAT TUTOR feature of the e-book (found also within RESOURCES)

As you study, do the following:  Read book – blue boxes contain summaries  Read examples  Use the “STAT TUTOR” feature of the e-book (within RESOURCES or in e-book)  Solve the “APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE” problems  Move to the next section and do the same (sections within a chapter are separated by TITLES, while on the e-book they have section-numbers. My study guides contain section-numbers as in the e- book)

 At the end of a chapter you will find: o CHAPTER SUMMARY . From the e-book, copy and paste it onto the Chapter Study Guide (my website) . Print the Chapter Study Guide and add your own summarized notes . Use it on a daily basis to review . PODCASTS of summaries are available in the RESOURCES . VIDEOS are available through RESOURCES o CHECK YOUR SKILLS problems . These have been assigned for a grade – refer to ASSIGNMENTS in the STATS PORTAL – make sure you complete them by the due date o CHAPTER EXERCISES – solve the ones listed on the homework document, or at the end of the syllabus

 As you do the homework, work within the e-book to use the DATA SETS, and CRUNCH IT features. These are also found within the RESOURCES  If, after reading, there is still something you do not understand o Listen again to “STAT TUTOR” (this is the best feature of STATS PORTAL) (within RESOURCES or in e-book) o Go to the math science center o Come to my office o Ask questions during class
