We are proud of our Vista Boys’ who finished in first place and the Girls who finished in Fourth place. Congratulations to both of our teams!

Creating Classes for September

Every year administration meets with teachers to create classes for the following school year. Please be aware that a great deal of time and thought goes into decisions regarding student placement.

Factors considered: - Viable instructional groupings - Matching of learning style to teaching style - Peer relationships - Ratio of boys to girls - Class size - Need for ESL or Special Education support - Parental concerns

The importance of any one of these factors varies from student to student. Each individual pupil’s progress and placement will be carefully considered. We would appreciate knowing any special concerns that parents have about their child’s placements, while we are still in the decision making process.

It is our hope that, with your help, we can implement a smooth opening in September. If you have concerns related to your child’s learning style that you would like us to consider in setting up classes for next year, please put those in writing and for- ward them to Mrs. McFadden-Hillman by May 24th, 2016.

Please refrain from requesting a specific teacher as staff assignments could change any time prior to September. Also, please be advised that we will be considering any information you provide in writing as part of the decision making process; however, it is important to note that the final decision regarding placement rests with the school. All class placements are tentative until all student enrolments are con- firmed in each classroom in September, 2016.

Are you moving from Vista Heights P.S.?

If you plan to move out of the Vista Heights school area over the summer, please inform Mrs. Kapsa or Mrs. Bumanglag in the office. This information helps us plan for next year and we can also inform the receiving school of additional enrolment numbers. Please call the school office at (905) 826-1581 for the necessary transfer form for the new school.

Scholastic Book Fair

Thanks to all Vista Heights’ families for their continued support of the library program by supporting the Scholastic Book Fairs. Once again we had a very successful book fair that grossed $11,000 in sales, which will result in $4,000 in new books for the Library and $1,000 which will be used to purchase technology. Merci!

Forest of Reading

Vista Heights’ students enjoyed celebrating Canadian authors and their books for over three months as they par- ticipated in the Forest of Reading program. All kindergarten, Grade one and Grade two students participated in the Blue Spruce program. Everyone has now had the opportunity to cast their votes for their favourite pic- ture book. Junior division students voluntarily participated in the Silver Birch and Prix Tamarack programs and cast votes for their favourite fiction, non-fiction and express books. Those students who participated will now have an opportunity to take part in a Forest of Reading celebration at the Powerade Centre on May 26.

Congratulations Mrs. Woerlen’s Class

The students participated in the Grade 4 Read to Succeed challenge at Streetsville Library. This class had the most students who returned to visit the Library three times, and are proudly displayed on the library’s Wall of Fame! To celebrate, they are

invited to attend the Read to Succeed Trophy Celebration at Mississauga Celebration Square! It’s going to be an exciting event with a presentation by Evan Munday, author of The Dead Kid Detective Agency series, and two-time Silver Birch nomin- ee!

Appropriate Dress for Warm Weather

Spring is in the air and with spring comes the warmer temperatures! Parents and students are reminded of school guidelines for appropriate attire as the warm weather approaches. Tank tops, halter tops, short shorts/skirts and tops that expose the midriff are not suitable for school attire. Shirts need to be an appropriate length and without violent or inappropriate language. The standards for dress at the school are based on common sense and are intended to sup- port the comfort, safety and modesty of all students. There is a strong relationship between neat, clean and appropri- ate clothing and a positive learning environment.

Asian Heritage Month

May is Asian Heritage month in the Peel Board. A small group of grade 5 students had the opportunity to attend some work- shops at the board office with Ms Godinho. They captured some of the events and their learning on their devices and will share that with the students at an assembly. To kick off the Asian Heritage celebrations at Vista, staff and students enjoyed a Lion Dance presentation from performers from Sunny Tsang Martial Arts with an emphasis on developing self-confidence.

On the road again: How to keep your cyclist safe Here are some tips you can review with your child to ensure bike season gets off to a great start:

The right fit  children should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground  a bike that is too big or too small can be a safety hazard  the helmet should fit—if it's too loose, it could fall off, if it's too tight, it's uncomfortable

Get noticed  a young child's bike should be equipped with a bell and reflector  older riders should have a light and/or reflectors

Actions that cause injuries  driveway ride out—not stopping and looking both ways before entering the street  running the stop sign  turning without warning  cycling in the dark  following the leader—one child goes through a stop sign or misses a parked car but the second cyclist doesn't
