ComposerC Liko Martin was born in Honolulu. He is a musician, singer, songwriter, political activist, and poet, a man of wisdom with strong mana and strong mana‘o. Growing up on the slopes of Diamond Head in Waikiki, his family was involved in music and public service to Hawai‘i and music was a way to pass the mana through songs. His © mentor was Kui Lee. The day of Kuiʻs funeral in Waikiki he went up on top of a mountain and took a vow to stand for what Kui stood for. Liko was a street person in L.A. and raised his family for 15 years in L. A. and Hawai‘i. He now lives on Kaua‘i. In a Voices of Truth TV interview with The Koani Foundation director Ehu Kekahu Cardwell, Liko talks about his songwriting process: “When the door knocks, I open myself up, paint the picture of the song, and then go back to doing what Iʻm doing, The song is like catching a wave, taking it turn by turn, and getting into the collective subconcious. All Hawaii Stands Together doesnʻt come from the mind, but from the heart. “When the music calls me, I go to it. I love to be asked to write songs about things. I paint a picture in the song, all personal, with different levels of consciousness that Iʻve learned to craft. For instance in the verse I tell the story of me, in the chorus I tell the story Liko Martin. Photo and song of us, in the bridge I make the transition between the individual and the collective. Itʻs a composition use granted by Liko hit song because it has all those elements. Thatʻs how it happens.” Martin 11/23/12 for Kauai Kanikapila Songbook only.
