Factors Affecting Rxns

Factors Affecting Rxns

On Friday you will have one chance to see if you can perform the fastest Alka-Seltzer® popper rxn. You will need to use the information you learn on reaction rates to design the fastest popper.

Use the following activities and websites to help you design your popper to help you complete SG 17.2 & expectations #7-10. You may use all of the following or only a few to complete your learning.

Marble activity You need 4 people to complete this activity. Use the string & a pencil to draw a circle on the floor. The marbles represent atoms & the circle represents the reaction vessel. All 4 of you need to have 2 marbles & sit outside the circle. Create as many molecules as you can by rolling your atom toward another atom, keeping your hands & body outside the circle. If an atom does not react it can be used again.

 What factors create a successful collision?

 Change the concentration of the atoms & repeat. What effect does this have on the rxn rate?

Orientation of reactions Visit the mhhe website to learn about how the orientation affects reactions. Be sure to click on incorrect & correct. You may use ear buds to listen to the speaker.

Visit the Sciencepages website. Concentration Click on or scroll down to the Effect of Concentration. You will see green & red spheres when you are in the right spot. For each of the two scenarios, count the number of times the red spheres hit the green ones.  What effect does concentration have on rxn rate?  Use this information to determine why concentration has this effect on the rxn rate.

Temperature Scroll down to the Effect of temperature. For low & high temperatures, count the number of times the red spheres hit the green ones.  What effect does concentration have on rxn rate?  Use this information to determine why temperature has the effect it does on the rxn rate.

Surface area Scroll down to the effect of particle size. Read & take a look at the information given.  What effect does surface area have on rxn rate?  Use this information to determine why surface area has the effect it does on the rxn rate. Catalysts This webpage also has information about catalysts on the bottom.

A summary of activation energy, catalyst, & temperature The wwnorton website gives a summary of reaction rates. Be sure to click the play button on the bottom to move through the chapter.
