Applications are invited for the post of College Nurse. The successful person would preferably be available to commence employment on Monday 18th April 2016

St. Anne’s College is an independent, self-governing College in the University of Oxford. It is one of the largest Colleges with 430 undergraduates and 250 graduates (in almost exactly equal gender numbers).

Student welfare at St Anne's College is co-ordinated by the Senior Tutor, and the College Nurse is central to this provision. On medical welfare matters, through the College Nurse, we work closely with the Jericho Health Centre (Dr Leaver and Partners) and we provide counselling services. We also have a Dean of Welfare and a Disability Adviser. The Assistant Deans (postgraduate students who live on the main site and who maintain good order in the student community) are frequently the first point of contact on welfare and medical matters 'out of hours'. One of the three is the Assistant Dean for Welfare. There is also excellent welfare communication and liaison with the JCR (undergraduate) and MCR (postgraduate) student representatives.

The Senior Tutor, is the College Officer responsible for all matters relating to student welfare. She is supported in this role by the Dean of Welfare. Clinical Goverenance of the College Nurse will be line managed (in future) by a healthcare manager from OxFed (The Oxford Federation for Community Services), but within the College, the nurse will report to the Senior Tutor.

The duties of the College Nurse will be to:

a. Care for the physical, emotional and mental health needs of students as they occur. Also dealing with members of staff who become ill or injured whilst at their place of work.

b. Close liaison with the College Doctors, Counsellor and other professional services in relation to each patient.

c. Close liaison with the Senior Tutor who co-ordinates student welfare provision (undergraduates and graduates).

d. Provide wound care and minor injury management, referring to College GP or A&E department if required.

e. Make appointments as necessary.

f. Visit students admitted to hospital and report, after obtaining consent, to the relevant College Officers (i.e., Senior Tutor, Dean and Academic Registrar). g. Keep records of treatment and consultations as necessary. Maintain and develop IT skills necessary to use the medical practice and St Anne’s IT Systems.

h. Visit students, in both on and off site accommodation, to assess and arrange further medical assessment when necessary.

i. Liaise with the Academic Registrar over action to be taken when students are taken ill during examination periods, including taking appropriate emergency action when students are taken ill at the Examination Schools.

j. Liaise with the Chef over special dietary requirements for particular students.

k. Maintain the clinic room to the safe standard required by the Care Quality Commission.

l. Continuous professional development (CPD) as necessary.

m. Take part in general discussions of welfare and related policy

n. Carry out other duties as required by the Dean of Welfare or the Senior Tutor.

The current hourly rate for this post is: £22.78 per hour.

Hours of work (3 hours per week day), Monday to Friday, are as follows:

 Michaelmas Term (early October to mid December – ten weeks).

 Hilary Term (mid January to mid March – ten weeks).

 Trinity Term (mid April to late June – ten weeks).

The selected person will be suitably qualified via the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The position is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will meet the following essential criteria:

 A level 1 Registered Nurse with current NMC registration (general adult branch) AND Hold a degree level qualification in a relevant field of autonomous practice (or equivalent experience)  Hold a diploma or other qualification(s) relevant to the clinical assessment and management of unwell adults  Be able to use Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and be willing to learn to use clinical software (such as EMIS)  Have a minimum of 3 years post registration experience working in primary care, A&E, a minor injuries unit or another relevant front-line clinical role involving the assessment of patients with undifferentiated illnesses and injuries; those who do not meet this criteria but have extensive experience in a variety of settings may also be considered.  Clinical skills in the first-contact assessment and management of adults and young people with undifferentiated health problems  Strong organisational skills including planning, prioritising, time management, report writing and record keeping  Ability to recognise gaps in services and to identify and act on safety concerns  Ability to recognise and work within limits of competence and to seek advice when needed.

The successful candidate may meet the following desirable criteria:  Further qualifications in relevant subjects, eg independent prescriber status, family planning training, mental health training  Track record of interest in working with young adults
