EET Workshops Implementation
Use this template to share the results of how you have incorporated the techniques of an EET chapter into your teaching. Let us know how you used the EET in the classroom by describing the projects and activities that you carried out with your students. In addition to this template, post a PowerPoint presentation or a text file with screen shots to document your results.
Name:Stephen Karl
Position and school:Teacher: John A. Holmes H.S
Title of the EET Chapter on which you based your Project or Activity: Life in extreme Environnments
Dataset Used: East Pacific
Tool Used: GeoMapApps
Project/Activity Question(s):Where are the black smokers located in the eastern pacific ocean
Project/Activity Goal(s):locate black smokers based on plate movement and create a profile of the ocean bottom
Brief Description of the Project/Activity (What did students do?):
Number of Students (With how many students did you carry out the project/activity?):Students worked through the activity, learning how to use the mapping tools and use the program to investigate the organisms that inhabit the extreme environment that surrounds the black smoker hole Time Spent on the Project/Activity (How many hours or class periods did the project/activity take?): Students spent 4 class periods along with their teacher. I am helping the teacher use the programs in her classes.
Your Reflections on the Project/Activity:
How do you feel the project/activity went with students? Students easily used the GeoMapApps program to accomplish the activity, and enjoyed learning about the different organisms.
What sorts of questions did student ask? What insights did they have? How proficient are students in using the dataset and/or tool of the EET chapter? Students wondered about the environment, the chemical makeupof the plume, and why there were limited locations. They started to observe the relationship between underwater ridges and location of smoker holes, and the different types of organisms. Most of the students became proficient in using the activity, with only a couple of teams struggling. This seemed to be one of the easier activities.
How will you carry out this project/activity differently in the future? I will integrate it into an environmental concept topic, and work with the biology teachers to do the same.
