Introduction

The part-time programme is designed for staff working with people with dementia in health or social care who wish to obtain a specialist Foundation degree in Dementia Studies. The programme combines acquisition of knowledge and skills in a range of areas relevant to delivery of person centred dementia care, with work based learning to facilitate application of theory to practice. Due to the prominence of dementia within national policies and its position as a priority health area, there is an increasing demand from employers for people with specialist knowledge and skills in dementia care. This programme has been designed with reference to external and internal reference points including the National Dementia Strategy (Department of Health 2009) and the Foundation Degree qualification benchmark (QAAHE 2010). Additionally the syllabus has been developed in conjunction with employers from health and social care and draws on over ten years of experience we have in delivering dementia specific higher education to the sector. The programme, therefore, helps meet the needs for workforce development in health and social care sectors. Students who will benefit from this programme are those who work in services which provide care or support to people living with dementia. This can be settings ranging from specialist dementia to more general health or social care services which people

with dementia may access. To successfully undertake this programme you will need access to a setting where you provide direct care or services to people with dementia and to a service that provides care or support to people with dementia. This may be on a paid or voluntary basis. The programme is delivered by Stephenson College staff with experience of health and social care sectors including dementia care.

Delivery of the programme will be via lectures, tutorials and independent study combined with work based exercises and activities. On completion of the Foundation Degree in Dementia Studies you will be able to progress to the BSc (Hons) Dementia Studies which is offered by the University of Bradford as an open and distance learning programme. Completion of the Degree programme will take 1 year of full time study or 2 years of part time study.

Programme Aims

The programme is intended to provide students with: A1 Knowledge and understanding of the diversity of the experience of living with dementia A2 A sound theoretical base from which to examine the nature of dementia and reflect upon own area of dementia practice A3 Skills and ability to promote health and well being in persons with dementia A4 Skills and knowledge to develop and improve practice and care for people with dementia A5 Knowledge of a sustainable approach to delivering care for people with dementia.

*Entrants who commence their studies in Feb will always take their first module in semester 2. Year relates to a calendar year of study rather than the academic year (which is Aug to end July) as Feb starters will undertake each calendar year of study over a period that covers 2 different academic years.

You will study a total of 120 credits at each stage of the programme, made up of 20 credit modules. Each stage consists of six modules which are all core to the

programme. You will begin the programme with the Personal and Professional Development module which will enable you to consider your strengths and development needs and produce a personal development plan which by which you will address your identified learning needs. This module will also include study skills support. The remainder of the modules at this stage will introduce you to key topics relevant to anyone working with people with dementia in a range of practice settings. Towards the end of your programme you will undertake a practice project in an area of your choice which will allow you to consolidate your learning from earlier modules. The curriculum may change, subject to the University's course approval, monitoring and review procedures.

Teaching and Assessment Strategies

The teaching and learning methods utilised in this programme include lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials and learning within a relevant organisation (LO 1- 9) The virtual learning environment is used to complement other learning and teaching methods used within the programme. This enables access to other relevant and contemporary learning materials and participation in on-line group discussions and activities. You will be encouraged to work with a mentor in the workplace or whilst undertaking voluntary work (LO 1-9). You will be supported to develop your skills as an independent learner. The Personal and Professional Development module will allow you to assess your own strengths and learning needs and plan how to meet these (LO 6-8). A variety of assessment methods are used including reflective accounts, written assignments, portfolios, reports, poster presentation, case studies and group presentations (LO 1-9). The methods chosen allow you to demonstrate that you meet the learning outcomes for each module and integrate theory and practice. Within the majority of your assignments you will be able to select topics of your choice for discussion related to your role in paid or voluntary work. This allows you to tailor the focus of your studies to address specific topics of interest or relevance to you and your employers.

Admission Requirements

Entrance requirements for each programme will vary but consideration of your application will be based on a combination of your formal academic qualifications and other relevant experience. If you have prior certificated learning or professional experience which may be equivalent to parts of this programme, the University has procedures to evaluate this

4 learning in order to provide you with exemptions from specified modules contained within the curriculum. Please talk to us if you do not fit the standard pattern of entry qualifications. Learning Resources The College have a dedicated HE Centre and Learning Clusters with library containing a range of books and journals to support you in your studies. The librarian can provide training sessions and individual guidance in finding the information you need for your assignment, and will help you organise your references properly. PC are available on campus which allow you to access the network ‘Learnet’ where course materials are available and a full printing service as required. You can also access resources at the University of Bradford including on-line journals, access to your University email account, personal information and other course related materials.

Student Support and Guidance Course Team Support for you personally and in your course of study, will be provided both by the College and the Course Team. You will have access to pastoral support from a personal tutor and will be able to discuss any academic or personal concerns You will be provided with a comprehensive series of handbooks that you can consult on a range of learning issues and your course tutors will be available to consult on subject specific queries.
